Might be jumping the gun a bit but I'll say now that the race is probably over. Butler has had several high profile roles, is fairly young but not too young, and has no reason not to run for re-election.

And the campaigns of Schiff, Porter, and Lee are designed as campaigns for an empty senate seat. They're not remotely designed as campaigns for challenging an incumbent senator who's a well-qualified mainstream Democrat with plenty of experience in Californian politics and a lesbian black woman.

They'd all probably be best off dropping out and running for re-election to their House seats– maintaining Senate campaigns just wouldn't look good in the new circumstances

Steve Garvey won a World Series. Herschel Walker never won a Super Bowl.

No doubt Garvey was the more successful professional athlete, but Walker is arguably one of the 5 best college football players of all time and in GA that matters more than what he did in the NFL. Plus Walker's prime was a decade more recent.

California is too big and complex for that kind of thing to work. You either need to be globally renowned (aka an actor) or you have to run more locally (if LeBron ran for a city council seat in LA for example he'd have a good shot).

So come January 2025, California will actually be represented in the Senate by two people who live there? What a novel concept.

She made the right decision. I don't know about running against Kounalakis because she's been the heir apparent for years. She should at least move back to CA after her term expires lol

Actually quite surprised by this news. I suppose she's probably wanting to avoid making enemies among those who are invested in the candidacies of the other people vying for the senate seat. Not sure what else her intentions would be though- gubernatorial run in 2026?

I was kind of hoping she would run for re-election and easily win just so we wouldn't have this annoying thread about a Safe D state race keep popping off.

I wouldn’t say Kounalakis is an heir apparent in the least.

Agreed. She may have a lot of money, but I don't think even a quarter of California Democrats have a clue who she is or what shes done.

It seems she might be positioning herself as the best chance for a female governor of California, but that allure would be lessened if Butler were to enter the race.

Looks like Butler isn't the only Marylander interested in representing CA in the US Senate...

Look, we only have 40 million people actually living in California, so it's hard to find someone who isn't a resident of a state of 6 million 3000 miles away here.

Honestly wouldn’t surprise me if half of Congress has an arguably primary residence in Maryland or Virginia

I can understand most pols west of the Mississippi taking up their primary residence in DC area especially those with families. This line of attack has been played up a lot but it's usually a hit and miss.

Yeah, I don't support Schiff but I wouldn't exactly call it disqualifying when you're living in the DC area because you're literally representing your state in Congress.

It's not so much the living in MD thing, as it is the potential tax fiddling implied by the full thread. I should have focused on that, rather than the snark.

If the Maryland house is his primary residence for the sake of his mortgage, but his California condo is his primary residence in order to reduce his tax bill, then it's not a great look.

If you have more than like one assett tax fiddling is just what you do. It’s practically encouraged by how the IRS makes you figure your own taxes out.

When the top 4 only total 52% of the vote everything is still up in the air. Realistically, qualifying for the runoff will probably require at least 25% of the vote (33% to mathematically guarantee it) so Porter and Schiff are not quite there yet, but hopefully Katie will keep cruisin'. Purple heart

In case it wasn't clear before, and I do realize this isn't necessarily a new development but Lee's unequivocally got my support and I've gotta assume whatever progressive grassroots support Porter had is going to be tenuous at best going forward.

Shes the most anti-war congressperson in American history and she's got my vote.

Lee would probably have voted against the war on Japan in WWII, or against the civil war for that matter. It's one thing being a pacifist, it's another one entirely to be a dumb borderline security threat. People like Lee and Massie are the latter.
