I hope Katie Porter comes back to elected political office. I think there is too much of a fascination and desire for federal office when most interesting things happen at the state level (Congress is -nearly- completely gridlocked, I wonder about the sanity of every person for runs for federal office.)

Ricardo Lara, the California Insurance Commissioner is term limited in 2026 and that office would very likely be a perfect match for Katie Porter.

F**king hell. A once in a generation opportunity to advance progressive power in the Senate and we blew it. And congrats California Republicans for blowing your shot at stopping Schiff too. You might have actually decided the race if Porter had made it through, but oh well.

In a way I'm glad the margin is so large, though. Won't have me agonizing over what-ifs.

Even though I see 'D.B Cooper' is a Democrat, as a follower of the weird and paranormal I still feel obligated to point out that the guy who jumped out of the airplane gave the name 'Dan Cooper' and not D.B Cooper. I thought for a bit that when asked for his name 'Dan "D.B" Cooper' gave the name 'Dan Cooper' because it sounds somewhat similar to 'Vancouver' and he had been in Vancouver, Washington at the start and it was the first name he thought of, but it's almost certainly a reference to something else.

I don't think this is a case of 'when the myth replaces the reality, go with the myth' because for anybody with even a passing interest in this true crime, the name 'Dan Cooper' actually is significant.

"He possibly took the moniker from a Franco-Belgian comic book entitled Les Aventures de Dan Cooper, whose stories notably involved "jumping out of a plane with a parachute."

If she ran and won for California State Insurance Commissioner she might well end up as much more significant than 1 person of 100 in a largely gridlocked U.S Senate.

Barbara Lee was such an anti-war icon and it's a sad way to end an amazing career.

Further downballot, Democrats are getting a collective 48% in CA-40 (Kim) and 49% in CA-45 (Steel). Far better than Democrats did in the last primary.

What an embarrassment. Maybe someday my state will stop rewarding the Pelosi/Newsom political machine for its corruption and treachery, but not anytime soon.

Who did you vote for today?

Tactical vote for Porter to stop Schiff. Really disappointing result.

The Schiff vs Garvey map looks like a 2000's level general election result in California when the state wasn't as blue. Runs out to around a Schiff+9 margin for the two way race.

Yes I know that. I'm just saying between Schiff and Garvey because their map colors are red and blue.

I considered doing the same, but decided it wasn't looking that likely for Porter and voted Lee.

I'll forever argue that voting against the War in Afghanistan was dumb (just like it would be dumb for Israel to ignore the October 7 attacks). So I'm happy that she has been embarassed.

I see your point, but the political media in this country heavily covers the U.S. federal scene (and especially the Senate) far more than even the most consequential state-level politics.

Politicians don't just want influence, a lot of them badly want attention. And the Senate provides them with that.

Very sad state of affairs for the CA GOP when a "good night" for them is just advancing to the general election.

Yup, though this is the first senate election for a GOP candidate to advance to the senate election in November since adoption of the jungle primary after 2012.

We're about half way counted in CA and the makeup of the Senate race is

D 57.3%
R 41.0%
Other 1.7%

From what I remember, I think it will oscillate a bit between a blue mirage and red mirage at this point after the in-persons were redder, but I feel like the last few cycles have been a bit confusing and all over the place in their trajectory compared to long ago, so who knows.

Just an awful performance by Porter and Lee though.

Didn't Padilla face a Republican in 2022?
