THE DEMOCRATIC DEPUTY HOPEFULS

SAFE  Dick Gephardt: solid congressional leader with union support who gets on well with Kerry and could sway bellwether Missouri to Democrats. But makes ticket Capitol Hill-heavy, and has zero pizzazz.

POPULIST  John Edwards: the choice of grassroots Democrats. Dazzling oratory would inject dull campaign with much-needed excitement. Empathy with small-town Americans could be vital in Midwest. But, poor chemistry with Kerry. He could outshine the candidate.

DEPENDABLE  Tom Vilsack: steady, serious, persuasive Governor and lawyer with cross-party appeal and compelling personal story. Lives on Main Street and talks Midwestern values. But no one outside Iowa has heard of him.

SURPRISE  Anyone called Clinton. Hillary is the nation’s most popular Democrat. Bill’s book has put Monica behind him, though he needs a friendly interpretation of the two-term limiting 22nd Amendment. But Kerry is not in that much trouble.

REPUBLICAN  Bill Cohen or Chuck Hagel: Cohen served as Bill Clinton’s defence secretary. Vietnam Veteran Hagel is friendly with Kerry. Helps Kerry scotch “New England liberal” tag. But rank and file canvassers and envelope-stuffers may feel snubbed.

FLORIDA  Bob Graham or Bill Nelson: Attack the symbol of the “stolen” 2000 election by picking either of the state’s Senators. But, after four years in which Governor Jeb Bush has worked to shore up the state for his brother, the race may not be as close as last time.

REASSURING  Sam Nunn: the former Georgia Senator with a career in foreign relations would help persuade swing voters Kerry would not be soft on national security

DARK HORSE  Former Georgia Senator and Vietnam veteran Max Cleland or youthful Virginia Governor Mark Warner

WOMAN  Janet Napolitano, Governor of Arizona, a swing state; or Kathleen Blanco, Governor of Louisiana, a more distant Kerry target

It's Louisiana we're talking about here... Remember Edwards v Duke?
The Crook against the KKK leader? Or the Governer (one of the Long's I think) who was commited to a Mental Hospital by his wife, but used his powers as Governer to fire all the staff and replaced them with his cronies?

Yes, after all, Reagan never raised doubts about the youth and inexperience of his opponent. Smiley

A very sound analysis IMO, though the lack of name recognition for Vilsack could work to his advantage - lots of media coverage defining him.  The battle would be for the Kerry campaign to define him before Rowe gets a chance to push out a negative stereotype.
