Bill Bobson was a sitting congressman and he was actually considered a top recruit who had a good shot of keeping the seat in Democratic hands. He just ran a horrible campaign.

I wouldn't go nearly that far, but it's clear that this will be by far Grassley's "closest" race since 1980. I do expect him to win by more than Ernst 2020, though.
