“They’re going to pay the price,” DeSantis said during the news conference announcing the arrests.

Of the 19 people arrested, 12 were registered as Democrats and at least 13 are Black, the Times/Herald found.

Oliver and 19 others are facing up to five years in prison after being accused by DeSantis and state police of both registering, and voting, illegally.

They are accused of violating a state law that doesn’t allow people convicted of murder or felony sex offenses to automatically be able to vote after they complete their sentence. A 2018 state constitutional amendment that restored the right to vote to many felons excluded this group.

But, as the videos further support, the amendment and subsequent actions by state lawmakers caused mass confusion about who was eligible, and the state’s voter registration forms offer no clarity. They only require a potential voter to swear, under penalty of perjury, that they’re not a felon, or if they are, that their rights have been restored. The forms do not clarify that those with murder convictions don’t get automatic restoration of their rights.

Oliver, who served 18 years in prison on a second-degree murder charge, registered to vote at the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles on Feb. 14, 2020. Six months later, she updated her address and completed another registration form.

After brief eligibility checks by the Department of State — which reports to DeSantis and is responsible for cleaning the rolls of ineligible voters — she was given a voter ID card both times.

Oliver wasn’t removed from the rolls until March 30 this year, more than two years later.

DeSantis is an awful, awful man.

Florida voters approved resorting voting rights to felons.

But the DeSantis administration doesn't care about the will of the people.

Disgusting.

Disgusting.

They explicitly didn't for murderers and rapists.  IDK if these specific people should be prosecuted, but in general, someone with those particular convictions can never legally register in Florida.

Problem is that voter registration forms didn't make this clear.

So to recap: The State of Florida issued these people voter registration cards, then waited until they voted so they could round them all up for a press conference about “voter fraud.” Disgraceful.

DeSantis is the devil incarnate. If there was anyone I wish had a MeToo moment that would ruin his career beyond salvation it is him.

These type of people never should have their voting rights restored but given they were issued voting cards , I don’t see how they can be arrested for this given it would then have been a mistake by whoever issued them one .

Why shouldn't they have their voting rights restored? The Justice system is supposed to rehabilitate offenders, and after serving your sentence you should have the same rights as any other citizen including gun ownership and the right to vote.

If you can't be trusted with a gun or to vote, or any other adult thing like that, why are they letting you out in the first place? Makes you think.

? Why not? They already served their time? If they can’t vote they shouldn’t have to pay taxes.

They should have to pay more in taxes. Mostly sales, but income tax too. So that companies aren't financially burdened with complying with the ADA.

I'm talking about that. I'm talking about anyone who is banned from fully participating in society for one capacity or another.

I agree with this.
The debate about whether this group of people, should or should not be allowed to vote is one thing.
But certainly, if they were given voter cards, then this means that the went through the process of being cleared to vote by government officials, and thus did nothing wrong when they voted.

It's entrapment. The government literally told them they were not committing a crime and then arrested them for that same conduct for a crime.

The people who gave them the voting cards should be the ones investigated, not the ones that voted. Seems like a Fascist tactic.

It is. It wouldn't surprise me if this was a campaign stunt by Dennis to convey that he is even more against Democracy, the Rule of Law, and is at least as aggressive in his style as Trump is.

I am an anti-authoritarian, in our current society where the government unfairly puts economic restrictions on businesses with regulations like the ADA

Companies should not be forced to comply to groups. The Civil Rights Act should be repealed so that business owners have more freedom.
