Council President Nury Martinez has come under fire for a leaked audio conversation between here, former senate candidate and current Councilman Kevin de Leon, Councilman Gil Cedillo, and Federation of Labor County President Ron Herrara.

From the Los Angeles Times;

Quote

Council President Nury Martinez saying a white councilman handled his young Black son as though he were an “accessory,” according to a recording of the meeting reviewed by The Times. Martinez, while discussing Councilman Mike Bonin’s child, said, “Parece changuito,” or “He’s like a monkey,” soon afterward.

A few minutes after Martinez discussed Bonin’s son, the topic of conversation moved to Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. George Gascón, who was facing growing political opposition. “F— that guy,” Martinez said, followed by something inaudible. “He’s with the Blacks.”

During the conversation with Councilmembers Gil Cedillo and Kevin de León and Los Angeles County Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera, Martinez also described Bonin at one point as a “little bitch.”

De León appeared to compare Bonin’s handling of his child to Martinez holding a Louis Vuitton handbag. He also referred to Bonin as the council’s “fourth Black member.” “Mike Bonin won’t f—ing ever say peep about Latinos. He’ll never say a f—ing word about us,” he said.

Bonin and two other council members called on Martinez to resign.

This is some awful stuff, especially out of de León who had the state party’s endorsement against Feinstein in 2018. It also shows the sectarian nature that still exists in some parts of America.

Also for reference LA city councilmen represent roughly a quarter of a million people, so they’re fairly prominent individuals here

I actually voted for Kevin de León a few years ago, so this is disappointing.

This sort of thing is an open secret. And it is part of or adjacent to the reason Latino voters trended towards Trump (particularly the Gascón comment).

How would this translate to Latinos for trump?

That's not very multi-racial progressive coalition of them.

It's actually something that would score points with conservatives since it goes against wokeism/CRT etc.

Sickening. All of them need to resign IMMEDIATELY.

Also, despite my frustrations with DiFi, with this revelation I'm now glad that she beat Kevin de Leon in 2018. She better retire in 2024 though (honestly, she should have retired in 2012 but whatever).

Furthermore, this situation highlights the Black/Latino racial tension that has been going on for decades in the Los Angeles area.

There is a history of Dem leadership and Dem-aligned groups/organizations overemphasizing ADOS voters relative to nonwhites as a whole. We also see this with "POC" and more recently "BIPOC" often being used as euphemisms for "black people" in practice, even though those terms sound like they also include Latin Americans, East Asians, South Asians, Pacific Islanders, Native Americans, etc.. A lot of activist discourse on race relations is framed in very black-and-white terms, possibly at the expense of building a genuinely multiracial democracy.

I also wonder if often being repainted by black voices makes many of these Hispanic immunities feel left out or excluded politically hence causing them to be less reliable voters causing the cycle to perpetuate

I definitely think there is a widespread perception among both Latinos and Asians that the Dem brand and the activist-media complex's discourse on racial issues are primarily for the ADOS community- even among those of us who are partisan Dems and very liberal on racial issues.

LOL, and you know what's the funny thing? Many "ADOS" Black people feel as though the Democratic Party focuses more on "Latinos, Asians and gays" rather than Black people lol. Some "ADOS" Black people even feel that the Dems care more about "foreign" Black people than Black Americans.

Oh boy, it's very hard to satisfy so many people lol. The ethnic/racial diversity of the Democratic Party is both it's greatest strength AND weakness. Coincidentally, that also applies to America at-large.

Hilarious content, truly one of the top leaked audio recordings. My favorite part involves Nury Martinez discussing how Koreatown may actually be "ours" because she's seen lots of "tan feos" walking around - wow I am sure they love being represented and seen by beautiful Nury Martinez. Also, to state the obvious, the thrust of the prejudice in their comments relate to Bonin's son being adopted, as Bonin is gay, hence why he's compared to a "handbag" and, the monkey comment aside, the preference for giving the kid a whooping reflects classic trash-grade Mexican mothering stereotypes for "la chancla".

Many of you will interpret all of this as merely being racist, which it is. It is far better than that: it's a bunch of crooked machine politicians whining about their enemies and being racist and homophobic because their turf is being threatened. Obviously, it sucks to be Bonin's son and I feel bad for him.

Kevin de Leon is one of the worst politicians California has ever produced, which is saying something. I am thrilled to witness the beginning of his downfall.

CNN has picked up the story

Los Angeles City Council president issues apology after allegedly making racist remarks in leaked audio

https://www.cnn.com/2022/10/10/us/los-angeles-city-council-racist-remarks-leaked-audio/index.html

As well as the NYT

Quote
After Racist Comments, Los Angeles City Council President Faces Calls to Resign

In a leaked recording of a meeting last year, she mocked Indigenous immigrants and the Black child of a fellow council member.

I didn’t realize this at first but apparently the audio was leaked on Reddit of all places. I’m really curious who recorded this, who leaked this, and why now?

Please tell me is a sarcastic comment.

If not, then the audacity for a Trump supporter/Republican to try and "dunk" on Democrats for this is LAUGHABLE...to say the least.

Partisan hackery is ignoring or downplaying any bad behavior by members of your party by insisting the alternative is always worse, more extreme, etc., etc.

If these were comments by GOP state legislators or former Senate candidates, the red avatar mafia would be as performatively indignant as I am being.  Don’t dish what you can’t take.

If a Republican said this you'd be defending them and saying liberals were violating free speech

Do you really honestly feel what she said was wrong or are you just commenting to attack Democrats?

The recordings resemble an atlas thread on redistricting where people are going insanely overboard on random local ethnic divisions - when they start rambling about whether Armenians are in their corner is especially funny.

Nury Martinez has resigned.  As she should.  This is how Democrats take responsibility for their stupid actions.  Notice a difference?

Martinez has not resigned from the council, only as president of the council. She, de León, and Cedillo are still on the council (and make up 20% of it)
