People like Sarah Palin and Ben Trash who betray their constituents by leaving their elected positions early (other than for legitimate medical reasons) should have to at pay some sort of penalty. It's just such a low character, classless thing to do.

A Trump supporter will probably replace Sasse.

Shame given that he's one of the more sane Republicans in Washington...what an odd thing to do...

Good, we don't need a RINO there for another 4 years.

I said it over on the other thread, but Don Stenberg would make a good appointment here. He's not likely to run in the special (and if he does run,he'd likely lose the primary), and he's an elder statesman in the Nebraska GOP.

Which here would presumably be in 2024 (Or possibly 2023 if I'm misinterpreting Nebraska law). Sasse's seat isn't up in 2022, and apparently his resignation date would be after election day 2022.

The term runs until Jan 2027. Will there really not be a special election until then?

It would probably be in 2024 (or possibly in 2023 if my reading of Nebraska law is incorrect).

Yeah, this guy's interpretation seems to be:

Appointee serves until at least January 3, 2025.

Special election November 2024.

Winner of special election serves until January 3, 2027.

Regular election November 2026.

I hope your happy losing swing seat after swing seat in the next few years. If your candidate choices were up to your God emperor, you guys would be toast! You'll luck out this year because it's a midterm but good luck in 2024 if you actually cower to him on everything

He never put his money where his mouth was. He supported Trump and the MAGA agenda every single time.

Yeah!  How tacky of Obama to immediately run for president as soon as Illinoisians elected him to a six-year senate term

Trump domestic policies were extremely similar to standard Republican policies since 1980 so why shouldn’t he vote for them . Hell Trump’s foreign policy was still pretty interventionist as well so Trump really didn’t depart from conventional republican policy much .

So why would Sasse oppose them

Somewhat agree. Note the use of the phrasing "more sane". He didn't vote to impeach Trump the first time but did the second time and is open about his disdain for Trump. Would obviously be a lot more meaningful if he wasn't doing this...

I don't hold conservative senators at fault for voting for conservative policy, just because the policies are also pushed by Trump.

We need fighters, not centrist cowards (so it's all or nothing) to counter the Dems. In 2025 you'll be respecting President Trump again.

Lol, Sasse constantly criticized Trump from the right. That's part of what made him so odious. In his eyes Trump was too "cosmopolitan" and too big a spender.

My brother in christ, Trump governed as a "fighter" for 4 years & we the people responded by making him the 1st President since Hoover to lose the House, Senate, &, of course, the White House within the span of a single 4-year presidential term.
