I thought the Progressive-Conservative Party went defunct after the Mulroney debacle?

I thought the Progressive-Conservative Party went defunct after the Mulroney debacle?

It did.  Neither it nor the Canadian Alliance (not "Alliance Party"...) exist anymore.  They merged to form the unified Conservative Party of Canada.

Not quite. It was decimated after Mulroney (won 2 seats in 1993), but came back to life albeit on life support before merging with the Alliance in 2003.

I meant it was defunct as in it no longer had any real chance of winning another election.

Which I suppose is not the completely correct use of the word.  Sue me. Tongue

This test is hella lame. I supported Paul Martin in the last Federal Election. Looks like Earl AW was right back then. He said I should support the NDP.

If you're taking absolutely anything from this test regarding who you should support in Canada, let me say right now that you definitely should not. Tongue

Pretty sh**tty test; does anyone know of a better one out there? It'd be very interesting to see where our forum members align; I've heard that the CPC is almost as left-wing as the Democrats (where does that place the NDP, LPC, and BQ then in relation to U.S. parties??)

The only area of social policy where Canadian politics (outside of the provincial politics of Saskatchewan that is...) is significantly to the left of the U.S's is healthcare.
Canadian society (and thus politics as well) is o/c significantly more liberal than the U.S though.
The increasing habit of confusing being liberal with being left-wing is starting to irritate me now.
Bah.

I think this test is crap - you need more questions.

According to this my first choice would be the Greens, followed by the Bloc Quebecois.

I am mildly environmentalist (but dislike the left-wing baggage many Green parties around the world carry). I am bitterly hostile to the Scottish Nationalists and Plaid Cymru here in Britain so I couldn't see myself supporting the Bloc!

If I was a Canadian I'd probably be a 'blue Liberal' in the Paul Martin mould, although I would possibly support the NDP at provincial level in some of the western provinces where they are the only barrier to a right wing government.

For what it's worth, I actually think Stephen Harper seems a reasonably competent and sensible individual and is doing an okay job.

Bah.

That's not the feeling I get from living in North America. I would certainly align the Conservatives with the Democrats. The Republicans are like the former Alliance while the Liberals are like liberal (in the traditional sense) Democrats, while the NDP are liberal (in the US sense) Democrats.
