Australia’s constitution says New Zealand has the right to join. They turned it down initially as New Zealand was less racist than Australia even at the time. Would they be comfortable joining today?

Given how long New Zealand's been independant, I don't think they'd want to join at this point. Especially since they seem to be doing perfectly fine on their own.

However, I think New Zealand joining would probably push Australia a bit left.

The benefit to New Zealand would be enormous; the benefit to Australia much less so.  Which is funny in light of the fact that New Zealand would, of course, be much more strongly opposed to the idea.

I don't want to butt in. It's up to them. As a US citizen/resident, I should have as much say in this issue as Australians and New Zealanders have a say in whether Puerto Rico should become a state, or whether the US and Canada should merge.
If it's not your issue, butt out.

It's interesting to contemplate what would happen if New Zealanders were subject to the same immigration restrictions and visa requirements that Australia imposes on everyone else. I imagine that joining Australia would suddenly become very appealing.

If New Zealand was an Australian state it would have 29 districts in the House of Representatives. This would expand it to 180 members.

“When New Zealand sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with them to Australia. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”
