Suppose that the Russians manage to land the first Man on the Moon in June 1969.  What effect will this have on the Space Race and everything else?

Very interesting question.

I think it would have been more of a Cold War factor instead of the Space Race.  It would have been a mental edge for the Soviets and a more negative vibe for the US. I'd say the negativity that plauged the US in the late '70 begins now in 1969 and it takes a lot longer to recover - ends in the early '90s?

I still think in the end the US wins the Cold War but the mental effect takes about 10 more years.

We continue the space race to the point where we have a moonbase, solar power system, space stations on the l1 to l5 points, spaceplanes. Technology is not much higher than now(maybe 1 to 5 years) but the technology functions better and things are processed faster. Basically by now we have say 2008 level computers with 2010 level ram/rom. A less technophobic world and increased usage of nuclear power. Nixon remembered as the greatest president since FDR for the new space race and other reforms the man did(I see a watergate less nixon as taking a sane tack on drug laws and putting in national healthcare). Reaganite republicanism is completely aborted. The gay marriage debate never becomes an issue as states start doing benefits/civil unions insteado f moving towards gay marriage.

1968 Nixon

1976 Ford
1980 Jackson
1984 Jackson
1988 Ferraro

For that to have happened, Russian technology would've been more advanced, meaning that we wouldn't have been able to lie our way through Star Wars, meaning that the cold war wouldn't have ended.  Also given that Russia had an edge on us, we would have wound up being the bankrupt country, and eventually ending up with an economic state like Russias, weakening the entire world economy allowing hte S.U. to expand as much as they wanted.

A Continued space race means that the SSSR gets bankrupted in the 70s instead of in the 80s and because of space/tech costs instead of military.

Not really, the Space Race was really close and for the Soviets to have the first man on the moon was possible had they had a bit more luck.  The Soviet's basically abandoned their moon landing effort when the best they could hope for was a historical footnote and instead they chose to go into the space station game instead.
