So how many of y'all have discovered and participated in the so called 'gig economy'?

Over the last few months I've been working the apps like Instacart, DD, Uber, etc pretty often after quitting my last long-term job to pursue my education and I've got to say... While I remain critical of some very real labour concerns with gig work and how independent contractors are treated that I'm glad it exists as an option.

I've been making more money than I was at my last job ($20-$25 an hour on a good day, more on a good weekday) and I make my own hours, take breaks and lunches when I want to and overall just enjoy my life a lot more. It's honestly been great for my mental health as well.

Even the one thing I was most worried about which was the social aspect hasn't actually been an issue... While I don't have regular 'co-workers' I still meet plenty of people throughout the day and have some great conversations with both customers and lots of employees.

Never.

But being a taxi driver sounds like fun.

Driving around, chatting with people from all over the world...sounds like a great job.

I don't do people uber personally, I wouldn't want someone in my car.

But grocery shopping? Sure. I actually enjoy it and it's decent money. /Shrug

I drove for Doordash last summer and got back into it recently. It's not horrible and a solid option for some extra money on the side. Plus I like to drive anyway so it doesn't really feel like "work" especially during low traffic hours.

I'll never understand the hate non-gig economy workers have for it all.  Not everyone needs "benefits" and it's funking stupid to force those people to pay for them if they don't want them.  Killing the gig economy (which is what you will do if you force the benefits on them) will hurt poor people.  Period.

Drove for doordash for a few days once during winter break in college before my auto insurance company told me to knock it off.

I've done some one-off 1099 work a couple times before, but nothing that could be considered gig economy. I'm trying to work less, not more.

Does substitute teaching count as a gig? I would think so.

Sure, I use my bike for Doordash regularly when I visit my Dad. Excellent money, downtime that can actually be relaxing and productive, and since I'm not wasting a car, no real expenses.

Excellent side gig.

Got an $70 tip today for like 4 bottles of liquor from this sweet ‘ol lady. Almost wanted to give her my card and say I’d do it for half whenever she needs lmao.

I took off early needless to say.

i deliver groceries.

to be honest it's not great but it's better than the alternative. i can't do a fixed schedule. my energy level is wildly unpredictable and this allows me to adjust to that.
