Apart from the NC Senators, the one thing all of the Republicans who voted for this had in common was that they weren't from the South.  The same thing was very clear in the House vote.  Southern Republicans are often motivated by a slightly different set of issues than non-Southern Republicans are.

Interestingly, Florida got the most Republican defections for Southern states in the House (5 representatives), while neither of its Senators voted in favor of the bill. Of course, Florida is more demographically distinct than the rest of the South and has different issues at play - for example, three of those Florida's Republican yes votes were Cuban-American Republicans who represent a metro with a prominent LGBTQ community.

The Florida GOP has done a relatively good job at expanding their base to include a lot of communities that are traditionally not associated with R politics, most notably, Hispanics. At face value, Florida has a lot of the demographics of a Dem leaning state but GOP overperfroms demographics big time.

Among the Republicans who voted yes, I wonder what the breakdown is between those who genuinely support it, and those who recognize that opposing gay marriage in 2022 is a losing issue.

Murkowski, Portman and Collins probably in the former category. Maybe Capito and Romney too.

Lummis previously had an awful record in these kinds of issues, so she's probably in the latter category. Blunt and Ernst seem like they'd be too.

Capito is such an enigma. I will never understand.

Another factor in Florida is the massive gap in competence between the state parties. Someone I talk to regularly said she listens to a political podcast where they said that the state GOP organizes 24/7/365 like there's an election every week. Meanwhile, the state Democratic Party, well, needs no introduction.

Is there an LGBTQ equivalent of calling someone an Uncle Tom?

If so I'd love to learn it, as there's a particular poster on Atlas who earns that term deservedly.

Kudos to 12 Republicans for doing the bare minimum!

Hilarious that even their church's endorsement couldn't sway Lee's and Crapo's votes, they just hate the gays too much to listen to their church on this moral issue.

Ya really sad that Lee is sitting in such a blood red seat. He’s possibly the worst senator in the entire caucus, though Ted Cruz gives him a run for his money.

A term I've seen a few times is "homocon" but it never caught on the way "Uncle Tom" did.

I'd rather be forced to sit through a joint Ashlee Simpson/NSYNC concert.

This might be a stretch, but one theory on Lummis is that she caused some controversy a few months ago with anti-trans remarks at the University of Wyoming (home of Matthew Shepard) and she might be trying to 4D chess a line between supporting totally chill gay rights and supporting icky icky trans rights.

Excellent observation!  I think there’s definitely a lot of truth to that.  It also makes sense that NC would be an exception.  Imo the Research Triangle + Charlotte has always left an opening for statewide Republicans to be a little less hardline SoCon if so inclined.

Whether under Dixiecrat or Republican rule, the South has always stood out from the rest of the Union.  Southern conservatives who have almost always dominated the region really are America's unofficial third party:

Re: Lummis

Wyoming is one of the few Republican states that never passed a DOMA law or amendment during the panic of the 2000s. It didn't recognize out-of-state SSM nor would it issue marriage licenses, but it didn't pass any new laws.

If conservatives would like to continue to double down on this sort of nonsense, I would welcome it. A few more Senate seats could give us some real breathing room. And a half-dozen more state trifectas would be a nice addition as well.

It was never in doubt, since Democrats got 50, McConnell would always have provided the extra 10 to prevent a filibuster.

I'm not quite as old as Joe Biden, but as an old man, I don't see how opinions can change that quickly on a topic like that.

Age is in the mind. I've met folks in their 80s as youthful as one would expect for folks in their mid 20s, and vice-versa.
