It’s honestly surprising how Tilis went from a stalwart anti-gay person in the North Carolina State Legislature to being a possible vote for this bill. I support his transition.

Is that allowed in North Carolina?

So who are the 10 Republicans?

Confirmed:

- Collins
- Romney
- Tillis
- Portman

Who are the other 6? Murkowski seems like a shoe-in but who else?

Blunt said he'll support it and Toomey also probably will.

I'll go ahead and guess, based on some combination of moderate reputation and/or past statements and changes in beliefs:

- Collins
- Romney
- Tillis
- Portman
- Murkowski
- Blunt
- Toomey
- Fischer
- Ernst
- Sullivan

Burr and Cassidy are question marks.

Reguardless of how this vote goes, it's amazing how in just a little over 10 years, we went from basically nobody except some activists supporting full marriage equality to having significant bipartisan support with near universal agreement on the Dems side.

If it's not codified this time, it will be codified pretty soon.

My very early prediction, assuming the Collins amendment is added to the bill:

Collins
Murkowski
Portman
Tillis
Scott (FL)
Ernst
Toomey
Romney
Capito
Johnson

On the bubble (3 of them will vote yes):
Fischer
Cramer
Tuberville
Sullivan
Burr
Lummis

Fringey (1 of them will vote yes)
Rubio
Thune
McConnell
Crapo

7/10 on the yes vote prediction, spot on for the bubble, wrong on the fringey (I would not have guessed Young).

Among the Republicans who voted yes, I wonder what the breakdown is between those who genuinely support it, and those who recognize that opposing gay marriage in 2022 is a losing issue.

I enjoy the fact that where my predictions were wrong they were predictions based on ideology and related factors (Toomey a moderate, Crapo a Mormon) and the fringey ones I guessed correctly (like Lummis) were based entirely on vibes.

Inflation is a worldwide problem that won't be solved by easy legislation. This, on the other hand, is a no-brainer.

Also the South Carolina closet case delegation is so embarrassing. Timmy and Lindsey are absolutely pathetic.

Murkowski, Portman and Collins probably in the former category. Maybe Capito and Romney too.

Lummis previously had an awful record in these kinds of issues, so she's probably in the latter category. Blunt and Ernst seem like they'd be too.

Surprised Fischer voted no, considering she seemed to have evolved a bit on it a while ago. Also, I see Toomey has resolved to end his career as an embarrassment to nature.

I wonder if Pat Toomey has considered that voting against the overwhelming majority of his constituents' wishes on popular, settled issues might be one reason why the people of Pennsylvania elected a Democrat to replace him.

Apart from the NC Senators, the one thing all of the Republicans who voted for this had in common was that they weren't from the South.  The same thing was very clear in the House vote.  Southern Republicans are often motivated by a slightly different set of issues than non-Southern Republicans are.

Interestingly, Florida got the most Republican defections for Southern states in the House (5 representatives), while neither of its Senators voted in favor of the bill. Of course, Florida is more demographically distinct than the rest of the South and has different issues at play - for example, three of those Florida's Republican yes votes were Cuban-American Republicans who represent a metro with a prominent LGBTQ community.
