On a Good Night for the GOP, George Bush wins all 50 states with Jackson carrying only D.C.

Jackson obviously loses by a wider margin than Dukakis. The country was not electing a black man left of political center in 1988.

✓ Vice President George H. W. Bush (R-TX)/Senator Dan Quayle (R-IN): 458 EVs.; 56.3%
Rev. Jesse Jackson (D-SC)/Senator Lloyd Bentsen (D-TX): 80 EVs.; 41.9%

Jackson narrowly wins Iowa with his pick of Gephardt for VP and his promises of vigorous action to help those suffering from the farm crisis.  But overall voters see him as too radical. Weak support (and sometimes outright opposition) among Jews and conservative Democrats keep him from winning any northeastern states.  And while the thought of a black president is inspiring to some, racial prejudice is also an obstacle.  Aside from Iowa, Jackson wins only DC and Hawaii.

Republican: VP George HW Bush / Sen. Dan Quayle -          58.4 % 523 EV
Democrat: Rev. Jesse Jackson / Rep. Richard Gephardt -     40.2 %   15 EV
