NM county commissioner removed from office under 14th Amendment insurrection clause

A New Mexico judge ordered Otero County Commissioner Couy Griffin be removed from office, effective immediately, ruling that the attack on the Capitol was an insurrection and that Griffin’s participation in it disqualified him under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. This decision marks the first time since 1869 that a court has disqualified a public official under Section 3, and the first time that any court has ruled the events of January 6, 2021 an insurrection.

Griffin is the founder of "Cowboys for Trump" and was found guilty in a federal trial in March of trespassing on US Capitol grounds.  He's well known as an election fraud conspiracy theorist and led the Otero County Commission to initially refuse to certify its 2022 primary results due to his distrust of Dominion Voting Machines.  Under a judge's order, the other two commissioners eventually voted to certify the results, although Griffin continued to refuse.

BTW this judge was actually appointed by Susana Martinez, a Republican Governor.

I feel like this is a dangerous precedent to set.  NM judges are chosen in partisan elections.  What's to stop a Republican elected judge in another state from ruling that the BLM protests were insurrections and throwing any candidate who has ever participated in one off the ballot?  If this can be applied to federal elections, it means the conservative elected courts in Georgia could remove Warnock from office tomorrow and flip the senate.  Is this really a road we want to go down?

Source? Everyone I'm seeing indicates that NM judicial elections are non-partisan. This judge has no party affiliation listed anywhere, but he was appointed by a Republican Governor.

Although it would victimize him and allow him get into self-pity, the same should be done with Trump. He was the one who incited the insurrection. It would never have happened if he just conceded the election on November 7 or at least after all his baseless lawsuits were thrown out the window, including from conservative judges.

Do any of you against this know what the oaths for public offices include? Allegiance to the constitution. If you fail to do that then you can be legally removed from the office. It's rare that anyone is actually caught on violating the other but it's there. No one is going to care about this guy being removed but extremists who support what he did to get removed in the first place. Good riddance.

Nope.  The Fourth Circuit ruled earlier this year that the Amnesty Act was "backward looking" and only applied to those who had been previously disqualified by it, i.e. ex-Confederates.
