One day, I will be a calm and rational poster, who doesn't fall for defection rumours. But today is not that day.

Labour should tell whoever that is to sit and spin. Why reward careerist slimes?

Exactly this, with Labour on route to win possibly the biggest majority in history, would they even have any incentive to invite the toxicity of the Tory party, and Truss, into their party by accepting defectors?

I realize the international law of the sea technically requires one to assist drowning ships... But this is one ship where I think Starmer and Labour would be best off letting it sink. Tongue

I believe the most consensual candidate for next PM, within number 10 right now, is of course... Larry the Cat. The rest have no chance at all.

As an American, I’m a bit jealous at how easy it seems to be for the Brits to rid themselves of poor leaders.

It's easy to get rid of the PM, because this is a parliamentary and not a presidential system, where the PM is essentially selected by the party and not by the populace.

On the other hand, it is harder to call a general election because this system rarely has coalition governments that can fall apart.

In just one week, the UK will have had as many PMs in six years as Spain has had since 1982. You know, because of the stability that FPTP provides.

Sam Allardyce in as caretaker to avoid relegation?

He's a Labour man which would make that problematic. Maybe Lampard could be persuaded to leave Everton?

This is the perfect opportunity to put a stop to any more Andrew Strauss High Performance Reviews.

An elegant solution for hitherto intractable leadership problems for both English Cricket and the Conservative Party.

In the end, Liz Truss united broken Britain after all:

I promised myself I wouldn't go all out on any more defection/whip-resignation rumours without some decent attribution. But, we have at least one MP willing to go on the record with his threat:

Reinforced by ITV's Paul Brand. If nothing else, feels like a concerted attempt by backbenchers to kill the idea of Boris as a unity candidate.

So, how will history remember Liz Truss?

One of the worst and least effective prime ministers ever. A historical footnote in fifty years.

Less of a footnote than many people who served much longer in the role. Not for the right reasons, however.

That or a well documented part of conspiracy theories, on whether she was truly a political agent seeking to destroy the Tories.

In the distant future, cyborg Victoria Coren will beam an Only Connect into the minds of our top mentats that goes: "Truss 55, Law 211, Brown 1049" and even while huffing spice they won't get it til it goes "Mxyzptlk 1535" or whoever the final PM before the UK dissolves is. There will also be something else connecting them I guess but our inferior brains can't perceive it without being able to think in 9 dimensions.
