I’m inclined to agree with Cassius here. This story originated in the Express, which is never a marker of quality. Even if accurate, “multiple right-wing MPs” probably just means that Andrew Bridgen has submitted a letter against Sunak (as he did against the past 4 Tory MPs), along with, like, Dorries and Rees-Mogg.

Actually starting a coherent rebellion against a PM in their first week of office is too wild - even for this lot.

A batsh**t session in Parliament as Tory MPs are somehow claiming our asylum laws are too weak.

The laws were ofc only changed in the last year by the Government.

The danger of Rwanda is that it won’t work and that means they’ll have to look at even worse options after it fails because they’ve whipped up their own side.

Braverman has just accused New Labour of having an open borders policy and doing nothing to stop illegal migration.

This will be news to a lot of migrant rights activists and the various hardline New Labour Home Secretaries…

It’s been a very depressing debate. Braverman keeps making the case for unwinding the laws providing asylum to victims of modern slavery - because she keeps asserting (without providing examples or evidence) that the process is being exploited.

Roger Gale’s attack on Braverman (stating that the conditions at Manston have degenerated entirely within her tenure) is the only Tory statement that wasn’t entirely comprised of some variation of “send’em back”.

There's a large discrepancy between the electorate and constituencies on immigration, the former is roughly 50-50 while 75% of the latter are majority immigration skeptics.

ERG members having a normal one:
Quote
Michael Gove accused of being behind plot to unseat Braverman

Tory members of the European Research Group (ERG) mounted a full on "save Suella" operation in the Commons tonight.

MPs said it was striking that Steve Baker, the Northern Ireland minister and a former chairman of the ERG, like Mrs Braverman, had sat next to the Home Secretary as she was pilloried by Labour.

One ERG member told me that Mrs Braverman had been ordered to put out the statement today admitting that she had sent six messages from her personal account containing Government documents.

The ERG Tory MP said they thought Michael Gove, the Levelling Up secretary, was behind efforts to undermine Mrs Braverman.

The two are thought not to get on after Mrs Braverman accused Mr Gove of mounting a "coup" to undermine former PM Liz Truss at the party conference earlier this month.

People will just blame Gove for anything. One of the more unjustly maligned figures within the party.

LMFAO.

Have the Tories become addicted to leadership coups? I think the party needs an intervention.

(obviously I wouldn't take this particularly seriously)

Well, if she makes it to Nov 1 it means her tenure at least lasted a day longer than Shapps.

The classic British reference is 'a vote of confidence from the board' or '[insert name here] has the full confidence of the chairman/owner', which are things often reported in public shortly before a football manager is sacked.

When does "the Prime Minister has full confidence in [insert minister's name here]" become a classic in & of itself?

I think they can just ride this out. Sunak will have to, it would be a terrible start for his premiership for his judgement to look so bad, and breaking the deal he's made would undermine his authority too.

He does seem to be singularly determined to establish a second income. Podcasts, NFTs, begging Johnson and Truss for a government job, running for various committee chairs, the attempt to flog his new memoir.

Edit: he’s been suspended from the parliamentary party, and had the whip withdrawn. Based on the comments made by his local party, this really might be curtains for his Commons career.

This is unfair on him really, but he's almost reminding me of Neil Hamilton.

There are a lot of Tory figures from the 1990s who have since tried, with varying success, to establish media careers since leaving politics. Michael Portillo is the most successful example. Ed Balls is the equivalent figure from New Labour.

The alternative view is that he should nip it in the bud whilst he is still enjoying a honeymoon with the voters (and yes he is, even if its not a transformative one) Delaying this just means Braverman doing more damage to an already toxic Tory brand before she is inevitably forced out eventually.

Weird exchange between Tugendhat and Cooper in the Commons this afternoon.

Tugendhat, as Security Minister, appeared to admit that there has been some kind of significant undisclosed data breach. Cooper went fairly hard, but Tugendhat basically just said that he was trying his best, and thanked her for keeping the confidence of the Privy Council on a recent set of briefings - and asked for non-partisan assistance on "this and future matters".

Starmer was called into the Cabinet Office for a briefing yesterday, so while this may well all just be smoke, there's a chance the government has been entangled in some sort of hacking or data breech scandal, that's still behind closed doors. Have to wonder whether there's an aspect to the Braverman or Truss leak that's quite damaging, but not public knowledge yet.

The exchange happened during a larger statement set up by Tugendhat to announce a new task force designed to "defend the democratic integrity" of the country, and prevent the "undermining of democratic institutions."

Edit: Tugendhat also refused to confirm whether Braverman had full security clearance.

There's possibly a reason why Leaky Sue remains in post.
