Faubus only because he was out of office by 1967 and an electoral failure after that. Thurmond was in the Senate, and this politically relevant, until freaking 2003.

I guess this. And it's worth noting that in all that time, Thurmond never actually apologised for his segregation. Till the day he died he defended it as "states' rights" (starkly contrastable with George Wallace, who apologised for his pro-segregation position in the 1970s/1980s). And let's also not forget that illegitimate black child he fathered and then denied being the father of.
