BOE didn’t release first round ward/precinct data til midnight. I expect they’re doing the same tonight.

Brandon Johnson is a moderate, like most people
If he is, he better convene a meeting with the police and firefighters unions because a lot of their rank and file are planning to file retirement papers 8am tomorrow morning.

Wow, Johnson won in Lakeview, an area Vallas crushed in the first round. It’s also home to a ton of young people/new college grads. Guessing they didn’t turn out until the second round.

Another drop of votes and Johnson went up another quarter of a percent.

Also, these GOP tears are SALTY... and tasty.  Smile Glad y'all are claiming your mans though, we don't want him.

I am sad. I love Chicago. I was there last weekend. This sort’ve seems like a now or never point to save it but I guess the people of Chicago want to be Detroit.

Just come out and say it. We know what word you're actually thinking. Just stop pretending to be coy or do a better job of it.

Uh-huh, your 'privatize services/education, beef up militaristic police responses and ignore the housing and mental health crisis' solutions are hallow and the people of Chicago will hopefully, and so far thankfully have, seen better. Republican concern for urban issues is fake and always has been.

Schizo heroin addict: I'm a severely mentally ill drug addict. I think I'm going to try to stab some people today.
Incompetent teacher: Wow, Brandon Johnson just made my pension even more generous!
Schizo heroin addict: Amazing! My mental illness has been cured by this shameless looting of Chicago taxpayers.

Ugh. Why do orange have avatars always wind up being the worst?

Short-sighted and silly; I've worked in the mental health field for years and I've seen how severely underfunded and supported it is. Clearly when there is active violent intent law enforcement may be necessary but much of the time they aren't and then escalate the situation as we've seen over and over. You don't police your way out of homelessness or mental health issues, sorry.
You can call it prison or a mental hospital, I don't care. The solution to insane drug addicts running around is confinement and punishing drug peddlers, not handouts to the least effective teachers in Illinois.

Just use the word Moochers along with that other word you are so desperate to let past your lips. Go on, cut loose!

Fascinated by the takes that Chicago is doomed because they voted for a new mayor. Even if his policies were destined to be destructive, how often do big city mayors (or any executives, really) actually get their entire platform enacted? If I didn't know better, I'd think that people can only imagine cities in perpetual states of collapse.
No pay increase by Johnson will make up for every decent child leaving the city, leaving behind the worst.

You're a gross person, just btw.

For all the gloating for the socialist lobby, you should remember this: Vallas voters are subsidizing Johnson voters. When your political opponents leave, your city gets poorer.

OMG we get it! Lots and lots of upper income and corporate tax cuts plus busting unions will do wonders for everyone from Chicago to rural Nebraska because Ann Rand said so. You're obnoxious contempt for everyone you consider to be the Moocher class is already a parent and makes you look really really gross. You've made your obnoxious Point repeatedly now Buzz off.

Vallas went down despite having more endorsements and had like a 2:1 advantage over Johnson on TV. That's something to think about.

Also...uh...I wonder what Durbin's thinking given that he went out of his way to endorse Vallas.

Honestly didn't expect this result! I guess this really was like Caruso/Bass.

I don't have a dog in this fight. But I will say it was very fun watching the mood shift among blue avatars & center-left posters from incessant gloating over a Johnson defeat to a defeatist hissy fit when he seemingly rose from the dead.

We can see that Johnson cleaned up in the African American areas, and Vallas in the White-Ethnic ones and Chinatown. Hispanics though, while clearly going for Vallas overall, were also visibly divided. The Chuy endorsement may have been what made this possible in the end. Every Hispanic area that is Uniformly Hispanic rather than mixed with the Whites who used to dominate them is tight.

Another place we could say Vallas lost the race is in the North Side. There is the Progressive Far Northside / Logan Square vs the more traditional Business Dem northside, but that was expected. This is not a few decades ago when the North was all one Block. However, it seems that Johnson's support in this area has expanded from the first round. If there is anywhere where tying Vallas to Republicans would lose him round 1 voters, or increase Liberal turnout, it would be among the politically informed economically-stable White Liberals.

Early vote looks very favorable to Vallas. The three wards singled out had the below results in the first round (per Weigel):

41st ward: Vallas 72%, Johnson 7%
11th ward: Vallas 58%, Johnson 14%
19th ward: Vallas 62%, Johnson 9%

Not surprised that the ward containing Chicago's Chinatown was the least pro-Vallas and the most pro-Johnson of the three, although I have no idea if this is because the ward is more Asian or because it's the least White.

Asians were Vallas’s best racial group in the first round IIRC.

I suspect the Asian voters of Chicago proper were less supportive of Vallas in aggregate during the primary than the non-gentrifier White voters were, and would certainly expect them to be less one-sidedly pro-Vallas in the runoff.

In any case, it will be interesting to see how the Latino areas break.

Current NYT results for the aforementioned wards

41st ward: Vallas 87%, Johnson 13% (3rd in turnout)- airport
11th ward: Vallas 75%, Johnson 25% (20th in turnout)- contains Chinatown
19th ward: Vallas 74%, Johnson 26% (1st in turnout)- SW corner

April 9 edit: they all ended up around Vallas 73% Johnson 26%

I believe in 2002 Paul Vallas did best in suburban Cook County while Roland Burris carried Chicago.

Ironically, those progressive wards on the far north side were the areas that propelled Lori Lightfoot into the runoff in 2019

Congratulations to Johnson. I really do hope that he will be a better mayor than Lightfoot, and that the best predictions about him come true and not the worst.

I would say the same about Vallas winning too, before you jump on me. The last three times I've been back at my parents' and drove into the city, every intersection felt like a good chance I would get t-boned by someone blowing a stop sign or red light. It's gotten crazy

Illinois will be down to 16 or 17 EV’s in 2032, and Brandon Johnson will probably finish 2rd or 4th in the 2027 Mayoral race, only to be replaced by a literal communist.

My prediction was just slighty off. Congrats to Johnson, I hope he'll be better than Lighttfoot. Ok, that's a low bar. That said, I thought Vallas was the better candidate. But that's democracy.

It was a close election and all that, and there are obvious other issues and touchy subjects for a lot of voters, but I think the result also shows that a lot of people in Chicago either reject the media driven sensationalism that Chicago is overridden with crime, or don't believe that additional policing is the solution to crime (or maybe believe that due to America being overridden with guns, that there isn't any solution to crime.)

Yes. Clearly if I don’t want Chicago to decline the way other rust belt cities have its because I don’t like black people. Glad to see we’re raising the level of discussion here. Is it comfortable in your little teenage box where anyone who disagrees with you has bad motives? Grow up.
