Republicans hoping to seize control of the House in November are already setting their sights on what is, for many of them, a top priority next year: impeaching President Biden.

A number of rank-and-file conservatives have already introduced impeachment articles in the current Congress against the president. They accuse Biden of committing “high crimes” in his approach to a range of issues touching on border enforcement, the coronavirus pandemic and the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan.

Those resolutions never had a chance of seeing the light of day, with Democrats holding a narrow control of the lower chamber. But with Republicans widely expected to win the House majority in the midterms, many of those same conservatives want to tap their new potential powers to oust a president they deem unfit. Some would like to make it a first order of business.

It's so cool how every President is going to be impeached going forward. It's a sign of a healthy democracy.

Republicans should never be forgiven for what they've done to this country.

It would be but a bread and circuses act since there would be a zero chance of conviction, but that I guess is the idea.

Have they considered how this may play out? If we have a Democratic Senate, a trial could become a multi-day informercial for Biden’s achievements.

I think there will be at least a few Republicans who won’t want this circus and will push for more Benghazi-style hearings instead.

Maybe if Republicans get a big majority, this will be a realistic goal.

Great news! This would give Biden a significant polling boost.

Hopefully, they do. It will show the country how insane the Republican Party is today.

I assume that a hypothetical Biden impeachment would pass the House, though Tom Kean Jr., Allen Fung, Dan Newhouse, and David Valadao will be tossup votes on the Republican side. Even if the Republicans retake the Senate, I doubt impeachment would gain much traction unless Mitch McConnell and John Thune heavily support it. I also assume that the grounds for impeachment will be something related to inflation, the Hunter Biden stuff, and the Afghanistan withdrawal.

Bring it. We did it to Trump so they have to do it to Biden. It's only fair, right?

Unless they find something real, there’s no way this doesn’t backfire spectacularly.

Not-so-crazy prediction: The majority of presidents in the coming decades are going to be impeached. This will be a new precedent in US politics, and therefore the word "impeached" will become meaningless over time.

If Republicans do indeed win such a slim majority in the House though, this is unlikely to happen.

It’ll be something to do with Hunter, or Afghanistan.

Impeaching Biden for what I can assume would essentially be "presidenting while Democrat" after nearly all of them voted against impeaching Trump for literally attempting a coup would certainly be a contrast!

This is massively stupid given how it would so obviously backfire . Keep in mind even Trump first impeachment, his approvals went up after that and that was after he admitted doing what he was impeached for on live television

Afghanistan. That might be legitimate, given how messy the situation was getting out of there. Impeachable? Don't know really, but it could have been handled better.

At least if they are going to impeach Biden, make it something we can learn from.

This could backfire, but I have such little faith in the American "swing voter" that I'm not sure about that. Hopefully it does.

It’d be hilarious if impeachment narrowly fails to pass the House.

There's a non-zero chance they'll impeach him three times back-to-back just to say that their guy wasn't the most impeached president in American history.

It'd be a shame if the Democrats hold the House so that none of the House conservative plans matter...

"Conservatives"? Don't give them that. They're MAGA cultists with fascist tendencies or just deranged reactionaries still bitter over their loss in 2020. They have no agenda to offer other than this garbage or fighting culture wars.

Also, did they learning nothing from Bill Clinton's impeachment?

It’ll be something to do with Hunter, or Afghanistan.

It would be something to do with Hunter; per lots of polling (and commentary by Shor and so forth), this is essentially the worst issue for Biden out there. Even if there's not an impeachment, an incredibly extended congressional investigation showcasing stuff like what the Tablet Mag article covered is essentially a certainty. I don't even know that impeachment is a political loser, necessarily -- the Benghazi investigation was hugely successful at lowering Hillary's favorables, and I think the second Trump impeachment was probably a success in keeping Democratic favorables high in the first half of 2021. You would have to avoid things like the Clinton impeachment or first Trump impeachment which seem to ordinary voters as being about trifling matters, though.
