The 1920 presidential election was held on Tuesday November 2, 1920. Incumbent President Woodrow Wilson was defeated in a landslide by Senator Warren Harding. As of 2022, this is the last time an Incumbent Democratic President was up for election, the last time a Democratic Candidate got 2nd Place in the Election Results, and the last time the Democratic Party won North Carolina, Virginia, and Texas. This is also the Second Time in History that a Candidate has died between the Election and the meeting of the Electoral College.

In 1921, Warren Harding took power, leaving President Marshall to enjoy his retirement. The Democratic Party lost many members outside of the South including their Leader. Meanwhile the Socialist and American Parties gained seats. Many Northern Democratic Voters who had voted Democratic in every election before 1920 would never return to the party. By the time of the Democratic Parties collapse in [REDACTED], they were only competitive in the Deep South. President Harding was popular and released many of the prisoners of the Espionage Act. However, unbeknownst to many in the public, the Harding Administration was embroiled in Corruption.

The Teapot Dome Scandal:

In 1923, It came out that many members of Warren Hardings Cabinet were corrupt. While the Scandal was named after the first of these to leak out, most members of Hardings Cabient were indicted in this scandal. While Harding would survive an impeachment vote, it haunted him for the Rest of his Presidency and he did not run for reelection in 1924 leading the way for [REDACTED] to win the nomination and the Presidency. This also helped Robert LaFollettes 3rd Party run in 1924.

The 1924 Camapign

In 1924 there were 4 major Candidates running for Office:
The Republican Ticket of James Wadsworth and Herbert Hoover, The Democratic Ticket of Gibbs McAdoo and Mitchell Palmer, The Second Progressive Party of Robert LaFollette and Charles Byran, along with the Anti Klan American Party Ticket of James E. Ferguson and Oscar Underwood.

McAdoo was supported by the Klan and was seen as a Prime Opportunity to reclaim the White House for the Democratic Party until Klan leader DC Stephenson was caught having done disgusting acts to many women. With this McAdoos numbers plummeted Everywhere. This signed the death nail of the Democratic Party in the Northern States. This election was also the first time that more than one American Party member was elected being Elected to 6 seats Nationally.

LaFollette spent all of his campaign trying to push the Republican Party to the left, however, after his death the Progressive Party became Permanent. This Election is the Last time the Democratic Party won Florida, or got more than 50 seats in the House.

Robert LaFollette died on July, 2nd, 1925. His Progressive Party was a way to shift the Republicans to the left and was not meant to be a permanent party. However his Son Robert LaFollette Jr. was not as connected to the Republicans as his father was and on August, 4th, 1925 formed the first branch of the Progressive Party, the Wisconsin Progressive Party. By the time of the 1926 midterms, 11 states had Progressive Parties. The Progressives hoped to elect the first woman to the Senate in the other Wisconsin Senate Seat. The American Party also had hope to get into the Senate this year.

The 1928 election elected Incumbent President James Wadsworth, This election marked the last time the Democratic Party won any State outside of Mississippi and South Carolina, the last time they won more than 25 seats in the House and the last time they were able to find a nominee for President or Vice-President. In Addition this is the last election before the New Deal Coalition(Progressive, Socialist, and American) came around.

The Great Depression:

On November, 6th, 1929, commonly known as Black Wednesday, the American Stock Market Collapsed. Within weeks the Entire Country was under the Grips of what was known as the Great Depression. While a Progressive, American, Socialist, and Progressive Republican Coalition did unite during this crisis and nominate Fiorello La Guardia as Coalition Leader, they were unable to take control of either Chamber. The country was plunged into economic turmoil.

From the Great Crisis: America during the Great Depression by Former Senator Harold Stassen
