Cuba says it will allow foreign investors into its wholesale and retail trade for the first time in 60 years.-BBC
Quote
The move is a major shift for the island nation's Communist government, and overturns a 1960s Fidel Castro policy of nationalising retail.

But Cuba is now facing its most severe economic crisis in decades, with rising prices and public discontent.

The policy aims to tackle shortages of basic goods, like food and medicine - but stops short of fully opening trade.

Government officials said that foreign investors would be able to wholly or partially own Cuba-based wholesalers.

But retail will not be open to international investors without scrutiny, as "a state market has to prevail" foreign trade minister Betsy Díaz Velázquez said.

Economy minister Alejandro Gil said the move will allow for the "expansion and diversification of supply to the population and contribute to the recovery of domestic industry".

In 1969, Fidel Castro nationalised Cuba's private wholesale and retail industry. The new foreign investment bill, however, recognises that the country's centralised government cannot resolve its essential goods shortage without investment from overseas.

We need to lift the embargo on Cuba. They have a LUNG. CANCER. VACCINE. And that's only the beginning, they're like 50 years ahead of us in terms of medical innovation. The embargo's only hurting us, making us a global embarrassment.

Trump abandoning Obama's deal with Cuba was one of his most cynical actions.

It’s almost as if capitalism is better than socialism, and even the most devout believers in socialism eventually have to confront this reality.

I agree thst the embargo is stupid and embarrassing, but please don't take Cuban propaganda at face value. Also, lol on them being 50 years ahead on the US on medical innovation

Well of course Cuban propaganda is Cuban propaganda. But that US policy on this has been amazingly stupid and short sighted for 60 years (Obama'a thaw aside) should not be in question.

The latest reported inflation rate (annual) for Cuba is 135%, so yeah the party is desperate.
