I understood the satire inherent in the joke, but the delivery and phrasing made it fall flat. He’s just not a good humor guy. He doesn’t really have charisma. Humor and charisma are distinct from intellect. And intellect is distinct from emotional intellect.

This is why they are losing the advantage on the generic ballot. They are appealing only to their base and not even trying to pretend to be reasonable like Republicans did in old days. Meh. It's gutter humor and a little undignified but not really the end of the world given the current state of politics in this country.

I think what this says more about is how extremely online so much of the GOP is - you have to be on Twitter daily to even understand what the gist of this joke is or have any context for why it could possibly make sense. I think that's more damning of Ted Cruz and people who laugh at this than the literal content of the joke.

edit: not that it's exactly the same but at some point during the Trump years Norma Torres stood on the floor of the house and attributed Republican nay votes on some bill to being "sex starved" and other than political reporters nobody really cared. Cruz's joke is worse (and dumber) than this example but not really by that much.
