Democrats preferred, poll suggests

January 10, 2007
Canadian Press

OTTAWA – A poll suggests Canadians prefer a Democrat over another Republican in the 2008 U.S. presidential election by a four-to-one margin.

The Decima Research survey was released to The Canadian Press on the same day that U.S. President George Bush plans to unveil his new plan for the war in Iraq.

The failed war effort has hurt the Republican president's popularity on both sides of the border.

The Decima survey this month of more than 1,000 Canadians found that 47 per cent wanted a Democrat to replace Bush in the White House in 2008, compared with just 12 per cent who wanted a Republican. Forty-two per cent didn't offer an opinion.

The Democratic preference in the survey was found in every region of the country. Albertans, along with self-identified Conservative voters, preferred a Democratic president replace Bush by a two-to-one margin.

Among possible Democratic nominees, former first lady Hillary Clinton was the most popular choice in the Decima survey, favoured by 31 per cent of respondents.

The poll is considered accurate to within plus or minus 3.1 percentage points, 19 times in 20.

Translation: nobody has any clue who the candidates are, and 31% vaguely recalled someone named Hillary Clinton.

How many electoral votes do they have?

Oh, that's right, ZERO.

Why does everybody reply with this dumb snide remark whenever people who aren't Americans are polled on stuff?  The poll was taken for interest's sake.

No offense to those sort of people but I'd consider Canadians more American than a lot of them.

No surprise that Canadians prefer the sane and moderate Democrats to the Christian Nationalist Party. Why would any non-Americans support the GOP?

Reminds me of a poll i posted in June, this time around from Austria:

News.at has polled Austrians what they think about George Bush before he visits Austria next week... bla bla bla ...

...

* 79% want Hillary Clinton in the White House instead of George Bush.

This would only be news if the poll showed that Canadians support a Republican in office. Now that would be noteworthy. This, this is nothing really astonishing.

That's because we Democrats are internationalists.

In fact, there are only a handful of countries--for various political, economic, and demographic reasons--whose citizens prefer Republicans over Democrats.  They are: Israel (for obvious reasons), Poland (Bush is very popular there for some reason), India, and the Phillipines.

The rest of Western Europe (yes, including the UK), Canada, most Asian countries all favor Dems

I think you are misunderestimating the Canadiens ! Canadiens are smart ! Tongue It´s an oxymoron itself that Canadians would support a Republican over a Democrat Wink

I don't think it has so much to do with liking the Democrats or even understanding what they stand for as much as it has to do with that the Democrats are the major political party that is not the party that Bush belongs to.

It goes well with a poll back in 2004 that showed overwhelming support for Kerry over Bush in every polled demograhic and amongst all parties (Including the Conservatives)

Poland (Bush is very popular there for some reason), India, and the Phillipines.

Poland: full of religious zealots, post communist, non-individual, synchronized zombies...no wonder they support Bush.

India: They will have to take the blame for supporting the Cowboy in their next life ...

Philippines: "The Asian Poland"

Tongue Tongue Tongue

Need some sleep ...

It's because of the Muslim rebels on Mindanao and Basilan and elsewhere. The US gives a lot of aid to the Philippines in counterterrorism, and Bush increased that during his presidency.

Who cares? No country around the world has any say and it's not as if any American would actually listen to other countries when they choose who to vote for.

Oh, I don't know about that; that Osama bin Laden guy and those rogue countries have a pretty good amount of gravitas in making Americans vote a certain way... Tongue

Bill Clinton is very popular here in Canada, especially in Quebec from what I have heard.  I think that's why Hillary Clinton is popular here. Plus, Canadians would really like to see a female President.

Now, Canada has no electoral votes (obviously... thank you Don for point that out, I wasn't aware...) but Canadians are very aware and have an attatchment to the American presidency, perhaps moreso than any other country.

Im thinking the other 41% have no clue what a Republican is and what a Democrat is/ or what they stand for.
