https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/spains-leader-advises-sans-necktie-conserve-energy-87620147

Quote
Spain's leader has proposed an energy-saving move that many men have already embraced.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has asked government officials and people working in the private sector to save energy by giving up wearing neckties at work.

Appearing at a news conference in an open-necked white shirt and blue jacket, Sánchez explained he had dressed less formally not as a nod to the casual Friday custom but to curb utility use — presumably air-conditioning, but he did not spell that out.

“I´d like you to note that I am not wearing a tie. That means that we can all make savings from an energy point of view," the prime minister said at the news conference called to summarize his government’s annual performance.

He said he encouraged his ministers and public officials, "that if not necessary, don’t use a tie.”

I'll take any excuse to ditch the necktie.

It's just a complete and total, unnecessary, impractical vestige. Men's formal wear fashion has barely changed in a century-this would be a decent start.

Well, it certainly isn't the kind of suggestion that comes from a leader who's exactly brimming with transformational ideas.

For over two decades, have only worn a tie at weddings at funerals. And even then I rather wouldn't.

I had to wear a tie to school so I associate it with tyranny, so I back Sanchez.

Don’t think it matters for energy use that much, but based anyways because formal dressing in general is a flawed social norm.

That kind of already happened in the professional world after 2008.

I'm mostly just confused because I had always just assumed Sánchez was already doing this. He's already so obviously the type to try this as an aesthetic that I guess the sheer power of his vibe overrode what I was actually seeing. (Does this make me the average PSOE voter?)

I suspect this will allow slightly less use of air condition if implemented.

This is a much more sweeping and extreme statement than I think most people on the forum have the skill-set to realize.

It's basically been weddings, funerals and occasional other former events for my whole life, and likewise I'd really rather not.

Bit late to the party - the NHS made this decision 15 years ago (albeit to minimise the spread of bacterial in healthcare environments).

The current Spanish political spectrum:

Left (Podemos & allies): Shirt only
Centre-left (PSOE): Jacket, no tie
Centre-right (PP): Full suit with tie
Far right (Vox): Huh

While he's correct, it's very rare to see ties anymore outside of law, commercial banking, government offices, and a few other very specific fields.

The decline in Western business attire is most proximately related to the rise of working women.  Men's business suits are variations on military/naval uniforms.  That there doesn't exist an equivalent uniform for women dictated that standards be relaxed for everybody.
