Quote
“Can I nae nae? No,” Youngkin confesses. Then he gets an idea, and his big, smooth, plasticky face lights up: “Can you show me how to nae nae?”

Politicians should know better than to dance in public, a rule that perhaps especially applies to a lanky 55-year-old white man in a neat suit and tie. Staffers groan; the first lady grimaces; the lieutenant governor cries out, “Don’t do it!” But Youngkin gamely plants his feet, raises a hand and executes a couple of hip-swivels as Butts gives an impromptu hip-hop dance lesson. Before moving on, Youngkin mutters the phrase that could be his signature: “How much fun!”

It's because Northam didn't Moonwalk but Youngkin can Nae Nae.

The Democrats lost VA because Terry McAuliffe is not popular.  In his WINNING race in 2013, T-Mac only received 47.8% to Cuccinelli's 45.2% with a libertarian (Robert Sarvis) receiving 6.5%.  This is hardly a strong showing.  What was even worse for T-Mac in 2013 is that the GOP foolishly seemed to quit on Cuccinelli, who could have won with a small shift.  The defeatism that other Republicans brought to the race did Cuccinelli in more than anything else.

In 2021 the GOP had Youngkin, who was a tremendous candidate who was not identified with the pro-life issue as Cuccinelli was, and who had skillfully been able to galvanize voters concerned (and letitimately so) about the infusion of CRT and radicalism into their public schools in a rather stealth manner.  McAuliffe, whose unpopularity (IMO) stems from his pretty solid image as an "insider", responded to the issues of Public School content as an insider, more concerned about the teachers than about parents and students.  And people get that; T-Mac was the Teachers' Union candidate.  Youngkin, on the other hand, came off as people friendly; if he came off as a tad "corporate", so did McAuliffe in an era of "Woke Capitalism".
