Would he do better or worse than Dukakis?

Better. The result would either be a narrow Gore win or a narrow Bush win. I'd be interested to see who the Democrats nominate in 1992 if a moderate southerner is the one to lose to Bush in 1988.

I think he would have done better than Dukakis, but still lost due to a lack of experience and just being semi-charismatic.

✓ Vice President George HW Bush (R-TX)/Senator Dan Quayle (R-IN): 304 EVs.; 51.0%
Senator Al Gore (D-TN)/Senator Lloyd Bentsen (D-TX): 234 EVs.; 47.5%

He'd probably choose a Northern running mate.

Not necessarily. Clinton also chose Gore, who was a fellow Southerner. Bentsen just bolsters Gore's campaign in the South and is a perfect balance with regard to age and experience. Bentsen pretty much would have been a A-tier VP for any candidate in 1988. Or a decent nominee himself.

Dukakis only lost by as much as he did because he rode a tank down a street. Gore wouldn't do that he probably wins

The prophecy would be fulfilled with President Mario Cuomo in being sworn into office in 1993.

Vice President George Bush (R-TX) / Senator Dan Quayle (R-IN) ✓
Senator Al Gore (D-TN) / Governor Jim Blanchard (D-MI)

Probably this, but just for fun...

...The Democrat-controlled House and Senate vote Gore and Blanchard in Tongue
