I think it's simpler: Georgia, Michigan, and TCU in regardless. USC if they win, Ohio State takes their spot if they lose.

I guess a scenario where, like, all 4 of them lose and the playoff has 4 non-champions in it would be weird and embarrassing to the playoffs, but conference championship games are stupid and should be abolished anyway.

More likely all 4 of them win and make the question moot.

I don't agree that TCU is in regardless. They had a weak out of conference schedule, the Big 12 kind of ate itself, and they didn't look impressive in very many games this year. If they got absolutely blown out in the Big 12 Championship I think the committee would put Ohio State in over them.

TCU's strength of schedule is a lot better than OSUs average rank of 47 vs average rank of 53.

If they got absolutely blown out in the Big 12 Championship

I mean I guess we could come up with a scenario like a 55-0 loss or something that would put their bid in danger, but let's say in the top 95 percentiles of loss scenarios for TCU next week, they're still in.

Buffalo

UTSA

USC (I'd like to pick Utah, but USC is the superior team)

Kansas State (Other than Iowa State, TCU has not impressed in conference play. The Horned Frogs are ripe for an upset)
Ohio
Coastal Carolina
LSU (Georgia doesn't even need to win the game to make the playoff (at least, I don't think they do), so maybe they have an off day against LSU)
UCF (Winner gets a New Year's Six berth)

Anyways, Cincinnati will probably be one of the favorites in the Big Twelve when they join the conference next season, so this will be a good vacancy to get.

My best guesses as to who the next head coach at Cincinnati will be:

Illinois Head Coach Bret Bielema
Former Wisconsin Head Coach Paul Chryst
Pittsburgh Head Coach Pat Narduzzi
Louisville Head Coach Scott Satterfield
Purdue Head Coach Jeff Brohm

Stanford is going to hire a west coast guy, likely with some experience with either the school or an institution with similar academic requirements. Like former USC head coach Ed Orgeron, or former Stanford assistant Willie Taggart.

I know this post is a meme, but Ed Orgeron to Stanford is the most cursed FBS coaching combination possible. I would absolutely LOVE to see it happen. Can you imagine? The recruiting stories alone would be golden.

Purdue Head Coach Jeff Brohm

Respectfully, GTFOH. WHY would Bielema leave a B1G job for Cincinnati?? WHY would Brohm?? Why would Narduzzi leave Pittsburgh??? Yes Cincinnati is an improving job but these names are just preposterous.

In the case of Brohm and Bielema, they've hit their ceilings with their respective programs. In Narduzzi's case, Cincinnati offers him a better chance to win a conference and presumably make an expanded playoff.

Just for fun, I'll predict USC and TCU both lose their championships to make the CFP top four UGA, Mich, tOSU and Bama

I haven't addressed it yet here but what a glorious day Saturday was. Way to go Jim Harbaugh for completely flipping the script and establishing yourself as the best coach in the conference with the best team in the conference. ~16 years of pain make back-to-back years of tears from ohio fans all that much sweeter. I just love that they are going to have to be irritable about these two losses for a-whole-nother year. Let's go for three next year!

As for Illinois, its been said by me in the past and by JGibson earlier, it was a remarkably impressive season on the grand scheme of things. Those losses to Purdue and Michigan State (and Indiana) are tough pills to swallow seeing that a trip to Indy was in their hands. But if you look at the trajectory of the program, I'll take being a regular 8 win team 10 times out of 10 if thats what we can become. That is really the most important thing. Now just need to close out with a bowl win and this will be an all time great season.

In the case of Brohm and Bielema, they've hit their ceilings with their respective programs. In Narduzzi's case, Cincinnati offers him a better chance to win a conference and presumably make an expanded playoff.

Both Bielema and Brohm have potentially very cushy jobs if they can keep their teams qualifying for bowls most years, and with the new media rights deal Illinois and Purdue will be able to pay them way more than Cincinnati could. Cincinnati may have an easier road to the playoff, but even in the Big 12 Cincinnati will never truly be a national title contender. Plus, Bielema learned lessons how taking a lateral job can lead to disaster (Arkansas) and Brohm has already turned down going to his alma mater which is a very similar school to Cincinnati. They just will not take that job this year.

Narduzzi would be making a fairly even jump by taking the job. But I ask when has such a lateral move ever really been successful for a coach. Plus Pitt will not have a very daunting schedule in the ACC moving forward, as their permanent rivals couldn't have been a better draw (Syracuse, BC, VT).

It's official, Hugh Freeze is heading to Auburn.

We know Liberty is willing to shell out for big names (that's basically how they got Freeze, even with his ethical issues), so it's plausible they get a high-profile coach.

Best guess for the next Head Coach at Liberty:

Former Florida Head Coach Dan Mullen
Former Washington State Head Coach Nick Rolovich
Former Georgia Tech Head Coach Goeff Collins

I'll buy Rolovich. No doubt Liberty would love to uncancel an anti-vaxxer.

Rolo not a bad suggestion, but the AD at Liberty, it's worth remembering, is Ian McCaw. Betting on a Briles hire here.

Would Liberty hire a Catholic, or any non-Evangelical to be its head coach? I'm skeptical.

Art Briles professes to be an evangelical Christian (and, no, having sinned doesn't inherently make that not genuine), so that hire would make some sense.

Rolovich is a Catholic, is the point. That said, "industry sources" [Liberty] are saying Liberty's not gonna hire Art Briles. Didn't say anything about Kendall though.

Liberty's AD was Baylor's AD during the Briles scandal, so if there ever was a chance for him to get another head coaching job, this would be it.

But I agree, hiring Briles would be too much, even for Liberty, which is hardly known for having a squeaky-clean reputation with this kind of thing.
