He was indeed, but that may - finally - count for a bit less in this contest.

Still might not help him though.

It’s a good example of vibes- I imagine people see him as more likely to be an NCO (even though he was an officer) compared to Tugendhat who very much comes off as a staff officer.

The later is also frequently lambasted by the right as being a europhile despite only rebelling once during the Brexit years.

Rishi has launched with a backstory heavy video- talks about his grandparents humble background as he certainly didn’t have one.

Noted heavyweight Jacob Young is backing him… along with the actually influential Mark Harper.

This is going to be like the Democrats in 2020 or the Republicans in 2016 isn't it? And, as in those cases, a lot of them will pull out before any vote has been cast.

Oh please stop. There’s such a camp chaotic energy that Labour leaderships lack. You need to click ten tweet to see the punchline!

Dowden, Harper and Fox all backing Sunak. Despite Maynard's cock up, he has got off to a strong start.

So it turns out Sunak registered his "Ready for Rishi" website domain back in December 2021.

I guess I'll be interested to see whether this comes up in the hustings, as a way to undercut his resignation as the final step in a leadership plan that's been planned for a while - or if Sunak's long-term machinations have already been priced in by MPs.

Sunak seems to have a lot of support lined up, I think a lot of MPs see him as a proven quality. Though he will face a lot of opposition from across the party, not least Johnson loyalists who will want to stop him above all else.

Kemi Badenoch has announced her candidacy, presumably for people who thought Suella ‘cultural Marxism’ Braverman was too soft on the cultural wars.

Baker pulls out and backs Braverman.

A shame. It would have taken him losing badly for any dent to go in his ego. The only achievement he has is leading rebellions and then asking why the village is on fire.

I generally lol that the Tory headbangers have picked Braverman- someone who ranted about cultural Marxism.

Sunak seems to have a lot of support lined up, I think a lot of MPs see him as a proven quality. Though he will face a lot of opposition from across the party, not least Johnson loyalists who will want to stop him above all else.

He is certainly the one who the middle of the party will back- largely people who are in the  ‘I want a job’ or ‘I want a quite life’ brigade. His nominations will be the least ideologically grouped and likely to span across intakes. Everyone likes a non ideological front runner (see nominations for Keir in 2020’

Agreed, and he’s arguably the safest choice since he’s already well known. Though I suspect a lot of people in the parliamentary Conservative party will note Sunak’s many severe weaknesses (wifes non-dom status, his American citizenship, involvement in partygate, he’s seen as a billionaire etc). I just can’t quite see him winning even in such a weak field.

Off the top of my head last time there were 10 candidates right? How many are there gonna be this time? Could we get over 15?

And Sunak seems like the early frontrunner, somehow don't think it's gonna be him though.

There were more than 10 (without looking it up) but a lot of them pulled out before the vote had begun. This time there may be more declared candidates but the number who will still be in at the time of the first ballot will probably be about the same as last time.

Briefings put out Javid should drop out for Sunak.

At this early stage I assume it’s likely Sunak gets to the final round- going to be hilarious if they Braverman up against him and she ends up winning.

FT reporting nominations will open on Tuesday, with the first ballot on Wednesday and then another the day after.

Do they have hustings at the MPs stage? It seems bizarre not to and just vote on vibes, job offers and petty feuds.
