Now that Todd Akin's body shut down because of legitimate death, they needed someone new to take his place.

Nobody certainly ever forced Greg Murphy to have sex.

The small chance that Democrats have at hanging onto the House is pretty much reliant on enough Republicans saying stupid stuff like this now that abortion is at the forefront of issues again. Looking like there's a fighting chance.

It appears to be more unacceptable hackery. Obviously, he doesn't actually think rape doesn't exist, but he couldn't resist owning the libs so he switched his brain off and posted that garbage.

Regardless of Murphy thinking that rape doesn't exist... why are adults having sex a problem, exactly? What justifies this level of state interference that adults can't be trusted with access to family planning resources, medically accurate information about sexually transmitted diseases, readily available contraceptives, and (in the most extreme and desperate circumstances) abortion procedures? Should we just be purely asexual creatures that only exist to replicate ourselves, and subordinate our personal lives to the needs of the state? If so, that's an awfully grim view on sexuality and human worth.

Because of (their interpretation of) Christianity, which legitimizes misogyny. That's it.

The Establishment Clause has been violated repeatedly by the Christian Right at all levels of government.

But honestly ... you don't have to be a rocket scientist to know about the many, many rapes that happen. It just takes but two seconds to realize that making (Tweeting) such a statement is ridiculous and false.

Stupid Idiot.

The whole "sex has consequences" argument is just stupid puritanical moralistic garbage. It's like telling somebody who eats food and accidentally chokes on their food that "eating has consequences".

"If you can't afford to have kids, don't have sex" is just another way for the wealthy Right to screw poor people… although not that kind of screwing, of course.  Even sex is now a privilege of the rich, apparently.

It's still hilarious to me that the same people who tell us to not have sex if we don't want a kid also believe in a prophet who was born from a woman who… uh, didn't have sex.

Republicans are going to keep saying revolting things about rape because it's a major ideological issue for them. On the one hand, since it's an article of faith that life begins at conception, aborting the product of a rape is unacceptable; on the other hand, nearly all Americans find it horrifying that a woman or girl might be forced to carry her rapist's child to term. The only way to square the circle is if rape doesn't lead to pregnancy. This would be such an elegant solution that Republicans essentially have to talk themselves into it, which is how a decade after Todd Akin you have that new Republican from South Texas expressing agreement with the idea that rape shouldn't lead to pregnancy.

I imagine this won't be the last time this year that we hear a Republican say something like this.

This is why abortion is an electoral losing issues for Republicans. Their extremists will be the ones that define the party on the issue in the eyes of the public as they pass ambiguous and draconian abortion bans that have all sorts of collateral knock on effects with healthcare freedoms and autonomy, not to mention the multiple PR blunders they will have on the topic of rape. This has the potential to be the “reparations” issue for Republicans, in terms of how out of touch it is with public opinion and the sheer amount of potential the opposite party has to exploit grievances with the populace over it, yet the Republicans seem actually hellbent on letting themselves get defined in this manner.

Forced carrying of rape babies to term. Attempts to restrict freedom of movement of individuals or to restrict the flow of interstate commerce. The state engaging in intrusive investigations of miscarriages of grieving expectant mothers. Even if they end up failing in these kinds of enforcement mechanisms, the fact they will try to enforce them in some instances or that elected officials will even suggest such things are going to define the Republican Party in the eyes of voters as an out of touch party less interested in upholding the freedom and liberties they claim to care so much about and more about imposing control on the population for the sake of appeasing zealous religious ideologues. The attack ads practically write themselves.

Side note: You know how when people say "X doesn't happen"/"No one is saying X" and I correct them and point out "X almost never happens"/"Almost no one is saying X" and people flip out about me being pedantic?

This statement is a great example of why I am "pedantic" in that regards.
