Today is Corpus Christi, the 60th day after Easter Sunday, a feast celebrated by the Catholic Church and the Anglican Church for the purpose of holding the Christian sacrament of Holy Communion. This solemnity was born of Pope Urban IV's initiative in 1264 in order to create a feast focused solely on the Holy Eucharist, emphasizing the joy of the Eucharist being the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ.

There is also a Texan city named after this feast in Nueces County, named for the day of discovery by Spanish explorer Alonso Álvarez de Pineda in 1519. With 317,863 inhabitants, Corpus Christi is the the eighth-most populous city of Texas.

When Americans hear or read the name Corpus Christi, what flashes through their mind first?
Do the citizens of Corpus Christi know what their home town's name means?

I 100% thought of the city. TIL it's actually a religious holiday.

Frankly I don't really understand why we need a separate feast day to commemorate the Eucharist when Maundy Thursday already exists, but clearly this feast holds a special place in the hearts of a lot of Christians.

I associate it mostly with the feast, but even more than that with the Jeff Buckley rendition of the "Corpus Christi Carol", which is the type of music on which my mother raised me.

It's not one of the Catholic feast days that is very well-known to us non-Catholic Americans, I guess. I couldn't tell you anything about it, and there doesn't seem to be a Protestant equivalent. Selena's city is one of those places named for the day in 1519 it was first sighted by explorers, like Easter Island, though it was not permanently settled until 1839.

The reference to an "angel of Corpus Christi" in the second verse of "Father to a Sister of Thought" by Pavement; I don't know which of the two that in turn refers to, though.
