What if New York Governor Hugh Carey had run for President in 1980 or 1984?

He apparently considered challenging Jimmy Carter for the nomination in 1980 and also considered running in '84 against Reagan. I don't think he had a great shot in either.

BUT, if Gerald Ford had won reelection in 1976, he'd have had a great shot at an open seat in 1980 and could have faced (and beaten) Bob Dole.

Would he have won?
