His announcement and the following mutli-state tour were planned in advance, so it's unlikely that it'll be changed now that President Ford died.

I'm excited, but I know very few on this forum are, seeing as how this dumb Southerner (he probably can't read like most of us, and probably burns crosses on peoples yards, or whatever the television says we do) takes extremist positions on healthcare, unions, affirmative action, progressive taxation, and other "issues" which have long been resolved by Reagan, Clinton, and the Invisible Hand (the hip, new Gods, I reckon).

He and Feingold might as well leave this country (maybe I'll tag along) for somewhere less Randian.  Unfortunately, our me-ism has consequences the world around.

Actually despite being well to Edwards' right on most issues he is at present, the Democrat I will back. He seems open, honest and genuine and dedicated to his wife and his kids.

He's supposed to making the announcement in New Orleans and I'm off work tomorrow. Maybe I should take a ride tomorrow.

I guess you could say I'm leaning ever so slightly toward supporting Edwards right now, though Hillary, Obama, or perhaps someone else could definitely grab me without much difficulty.

Considering I received a robo-call today for an event he's holding on the 30th, he better being running.  Running away that is.  It's not even 2007 and its already started.

what the hell are you talking about?  No president elected has been able to eliminate any of the aforementioned.  And hopefully if you want a socialist "utopia" you should move to Cuba or Chile where the system works so well.

If Barack Obama doesn't run than Edwards will have my full backing for the nomination.

Not a huge fan of Edwards, but of course, he is strongly preferable to any Republican seeking the nomination. In terms of electability, I guess I'd support him if Obama opted out of the race, but that's only because all of my other favorites have already dropped out/chosen not to run.

His announcement just highlights how truly weak the current line-up of Democrats really are.

On the GOP side you have heavyweights John McCain, Former NYC mayor Rudy Guiliani, and even respectable figures like Chuck Hagel....and then you look at the Democrats and you see an inexperienced yokel, an opportunistic hag, and a TWO YEAR senator.  As a Democrat, I shudder at the thought of a Republican keeping the WH for another 8 years, but unless the Dems can dish out a truly formidable candidate, this is likely to happen

WTF? It's the Republicans who are weak.
McCain is going to be so easy to attack
Guiliani will get killed by the right-wing base for his socially liberal views
Hagel has zero chance at the nomination

Edwards, Obama, and Hillary have peaked way too early...can you picture Edwards becoming president with just 5 years in the Senate?  Can you picture Hillary (*shudder*) as president?  Can you picture a TWO YEAR senator (*snicker*) as president ?

The answer to all these questions is "no".  The Dem candidate will not be any of these three.  Trust me

I can just imagine you talking about what a joke Abe Lincoln was in 1860.

For over a decade, Lincoln was already well-known as the emodiement of the Free Soilers and rode a wave of anti-slavery sentiment in the western states.  Who, exactly, is John Edwards?  The only things I know about him is that he was a 6 year senator who voted for the Iraq war and that he wrote a ridiculous book titled "Home"

What else has he done?  I have no idea

Who do you think will be the Democratic candidate then?  I'm not criticizing, I'm just curious who you think gets the nod if the three current frontrunners have no shot.  Personally I kinda hop you are right as I'd like to see Richardson win it.

The thing about Richardson is that I have the feeling that there are some people who are now saying that Richardson would be a good candidate, who wouldn't support him in the general election if he got the nomination. We saw this already with Kerry.

Yes, I believe the Dem nominee will be a former governor.  Remember, Clinton didn't make his announcement until October 1991 - 3 months before the Iowa caucus.

One has to keep in mind that even though the line-up is not particularly strong it isn't really weak either. I don't see anyone else jumping in because it'll be really hard. Obama, Clinton, Edwards all have quite a lot going for themselves. I don't really see anyone else squeeze in there.

Anybody here hoping that John Edwards joins in sharing the distinction held by Thomas Hendricks,  Adlai Stevenson, and Charles Fairbanks?

Not really. He was a poor VP candidate in 2004, and wouldn't add anything to the ticket in 2008.
