It is interesting how we tend to have more ex-Presidents living in modern history than at any other point in our past (except for the 1860's).  I wonder how much of that is due to our Presidents being younger compared to the improvements in our medical technology.

We had 0 just 3 decades ago - would have been until Jan. 20, 1977 if Nixon hadn't resigned.

If the next President is a 2 term President, we'll probably be looking at just 2 ex-Presidents (Clinton, GW Bush) on Jan. 19, 2017. Another 2 term President, and I'd expect only about 1 or 2 living ex-Presidents on Jan. 19, 2025

Well done on those stats brother.

Keep in mind though on 19 Jan 2017, if Carter and GHW Bush are around, they would be only 92 and with their current health, they could be (and I hope so) around in 10 years!

Damn, I was thinking of posting that trivia question - what sets Abraham Lincoln, Bill Clinton and Walker Bush apart from all other US presidents - but fern's already posted the answer.

Interesting to note that there have only been 2 periods of time in which their were 5 living ex-Presidents and they were both at times of extreme national crisis.  At the beginning of the Civil War and 9/11.

Both Bush and Clinton will be 78 years old on January 19, 2025. They should both still be alive, as should the President that served from 2009-2017.

Actually, also at the beginning of Clinton's Presidency.

As grotesque as it sounds to say it, but Clinton's heart troubles don't bode too well for a long lifespan.

Well with the '04 bypass, it absolutely expands his life span.

On a personal note: My grandfather had one in 1982 and he's still kicking around at 86 years old.  Clinton can easily make another 25-30 years on it.

I just realized that there was a long period in which no ex-presidents died - 1973 to 1994.  Nixon was the first ex-president to die in my lifetime, Reagan was the second, and Ford was the third.  Unfortunately, I don't think the luck of 1973-1994 will repeat soon, as Carter and Bush Sr. are in their 80s.
