Assume Chappaquiddick never happens and Kennedy runs for the Democratic nomination in 1972 and defeats McGovern and a few others for the nomination.  How does he fare against Richard Nixon?

As I said in the other thread - McGovern wanted Kennedy to be his running mate even with Chappaquiddick..

He would do much better than McGovern - simply because he was a well-known Kennedy and thus couldn't be painted as a radical who supported the student movement and 'Aid, Amnesty and Abortion'. (Though McGovern was neither of those anyway.)

Without scandal, Kennedy has the potential to make it close:

291-247 Nixon
