Justice Van Devanter favored a limited reading of the commerce clause, but only because of his conservative activism, not because of any particular fidelity to the text of the Constitution. His views on substantive due process are sufficient to make him a horrible person.

HP. To Van Devanter, the text of the Constitution was more or less irrelevant. He was a consistent vote for conservative policy results, and on that basis.

(Of course, he was not nearly as bad as McReynolds, mind you, who was literally a 'horrible person'--to understate the matter.)
