No, otherwise you'd all just be aimlessly attacking each others' states hoping to win three opponents' capitals by chance.  This way is similar to 'capture the flag' in many ways.

That would actually be highly amusing.

I've sent a PM to Peter asking him to choose a capital.  As soon as that's done we can begin, and it'll be Peter up first.

Thanks. Smiley

So here's the first map from which to start the game:

General Peter Bell, it is your turn.  You have 3 reinforcements.

+ [8 states ÷ 3 = 2.67 reinforcements]
+ [No regions held]
= 3 reinforcements

1 each to NY, DE and NV.

I then wish to order my first attack of DE against NJ. I shall attack with the three free battalions that are present. The British Army never retreats - my units will not break off their assault. Should I be successful, please move one unit into Delaware.

If you successfully conquer a state, you have to move a minimum of 3 into your new state (or as many as possible to get as close to that minimum).  Do you want to adjust your orders?

I apologise, I misinterpreted the instruction as meaning we had to leave at least three in the originating state.

I wish to therefore leave only one behind and move as many as possible into DE.

I assume you meant NJ?  It's alright, I understand that your confusion is caused by teh ghey virus.

Reinforcements

New York, Delaware and Nevada have each received 1 battalion, which means that there are now 11, 4 and 3 battalions in each state respectively.

Attacks

Delaware invades New Jersey (Ernest), with 3 battalions attacking, and 2 battalions defending.

Peter Bell rolls 3 dice: 6 5 4
Ernest rolls 1 dice: 4
Ernest loses 1 battalion

Peter Bell rolls 3 dice: 6 3 3
Ernest rolls 1 dice: 4
Ernest loses 1 battalion

Peter Bell conquers New Jersey with 3 attacking battalions remaining.  All 3 will remain in New Jersey.

Why did only one of my battalions defend the first time?  Is this some new-fangled rule that's been added to Risk since I got the game back in the 80's? I certainly would not have placed 2 battalions in New Jersey if I had been aware that was the case, I would have done either 1 or 3 as my intent was that any attacker would have to face at least one attack with the odds being 3:2.

That is the 'default setting' in the newer versions of Risk that I'm familiar with.  I can vary it from player to player on an ad hoc basis if you want, so that from now on you'll be using as many dice as you have defending battalions.

When defending, I will always use 2 armies if available.  I can think of only 2 reasons why one would use this 1 and 1 option, and neither one of them would be my default reasoning.

Does everybody else feel the same way?  If so, I can change the system for everybody else too.  If not, you'll each just have to say so if that's how you want me to 'control' your defenses.

I definitely feel the same way as Ernest, as I'm sure most folks do. But I won't speak for anyone.

I am happy to agree with Ernest.

I shall now attack Virginia from Maryland.

All available battalions will attack, and as ever, the British Army never retreats. Please move as few battalions as possible into VA.

Attacks (cont.)

Maryland invades Virginia (Josh22), with 4 battalions attacking, and 1 battalion defending.

Peter Bell rolls 3 dice: 5 3 2
Josh22 rolls 1 dice: 1
Josh22 loses 1 battalion

Peter Bell conquers Virginia with 4 attacking battalions remaining.  3 of them will remain in Virginia, while the other will return to Maryland; where there are now 2 battalions.
