From Political Wire:

Byrd Gives Up Pork

"Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV) "has built a reputation in Congress and in West Virginia using special interest funding to bring federal jobs and money home, but the king of pork said he's willing to give up his projects for 2007 to find a way out of the 'fiscal chaos' left by the outgoing Republican-led Congress," according to the Gannett News Service.

With Democrats promising earmark reform in Congress next year, this gesture may become more than a symbolic one."

If Byrd follows through on what he says this is great news for everyone....Democrats, Republicans, independents, Martians, Klingons.....everyone. This country's need to get ahold of its debt and spending is second only to it's need to get out of Iraq.

I'll believe it when I see it. That said...hopefully Ted "bridge to nowhere" stevens will follow him on up on this.

^^^^

Actually, what Byrd will likely try is instead of earmarks, is increase funding for the ARC.  West Virginia is the only state that the entirety of it is in the region covered by the ARC so while such an action doesn't guarantee that the ARC pork will end up in West Virginia, a fair amount of it will.  The ARC started off with good purposes, but these days it's just a mechanism for shoveling pork and ought to be abolished.
