Let's put it this way. He was one of two Senators to vote against the confirmation of Robert Gates as Secretary of Defense. Santorum was the other. He (Santorum) cited the "clash of cultures" and other neoconservative jargon long abandoned even by most neoconservatives as his reason. (Whether Santorum actually believed it or was taking a parting shot at the Bush administration that partially sunk his chances for reelection, I can't say, but that's not relevant.) Bunning, on the other hand, mumbled something about Gates not being up to the job without really making an argument. Did Bunning even know he was voting against a Republican appointment? I'm not sure.

Maybe it's not such a bad thing that Ben Chandler passed on the '07 Governor's race then. I think Chandler would be the favorite for an open seat race if Bunning retires. If Bunning dosen't retire, which I think would be insane, he would definitely be his own worst enemy to reelection, even more so than in '04.

This is the first time in a while that I've been angry at Republican for standing up to Bush.  I still can't believe Mongiardo lost.

Don't forget him charging that his opponent's staffers beat his wife "black and blue"!
