It's becoming clear that either McCain or Romney will get the Republican Nomination, especially so towards McCain.

Who are serious possible running mates that would make up a Republican Nominee McCain or Romney short list?

Romney would take a VEEP spot, but I highly doubt McCain would. He could do more in the Senate than as a VP.

You're forgetting Rudy Giuliani.

Veep picks for Giuliani/McCain/Romney:

John Thune
Tim Pawlenty
Jeb Bush
John Sununu
David Vitter
Norm Coleman
Richard Burr
Fred Thompson
Tommy Thompson
Lindsey Graham

My favorite tickets would be a

McCain/Guiliani
McCain/Thompson
Thompson/Shays

I'm a huge fan of John McCain. I supported him in the 2000 primaries, and I'm ready to support him in 2008.

People aren't thinking that Tommy Thompson won't put up much of a fight, but I think he is going to do a lot better than most people think when the Primaries start up.

Do you think Burr would have a shot on the list?

Pawlenty would be a strong choice. They'll already be hold their convention in Minneapolis and with its Governor on the #2 spot, they'll have a serious chance of taking Minnesota. If the GOP takes Minnesota, the election is over. Period.

With luck though, Pawlenty will not be popular in 2008.

For McCain, Pawlenty would the best selection for him.

For Romney - Fred Thompson or Lindsey Graham.

Personally, I would love to see Fred Thompson mak his own run for the White House. He'd have my backing from the get go.

Most of those are pretty good, although I can't imagine that Jeb Bush would be tapped for VP in '08, even if GW Bush becomes much more popular between now and then.  The '08 nominee has to be seen as his own man....more than just a continuation of the current administration, and a Bush on the ticket would undermine that.

Also, I know I'm a broken record on this, but once again, I must point out that governors are never picked as VP anymore.  Haven't had one in the VP slot on either party's ticket since (I think) Spiro Agnew.  However, I could potentiallly see McCain breaking this tradition by going with Pawlenty, as McCain has loads of Washington experience to offset Pawlenty's lack of same, and Pawlenty's youth could be used to offset McCain's age as a liability.  Also, Mark Sanford is another potential VP candidate who might be immune from the "governors never get picked for VP" rule since he did serve in Congress for six years.

Oh, and I'll also add some more names to the mix:
Judd Gregg
John Kasich
Don Nickles

No, I definitely can't see McCain or Giuliani choosing Pawlenty.  Huckabee might likely choose him.  (actually a good pick for Huckabee might be Colin Powell)

How about Nevada Senator John Ensign? He appears conservative enough to help balance a more moderate McCain, he will be 50 years old in 2008, and was just re-elected.

Neither John McCain or Rudy Giuliani would accept a VP slot. They both have their eye on the Presidency and only the Presidency. If they don't win the nomination, they're both out.

agreed....McCain would be no one's #2.  I could live with McCain / Romney.
