although I'm skeptical that it "almost" happened - do conservatives actually get scared and endorse term limits or something akin to that (rule of 90)? Because I feel a lot of the democratic party would be more willing to forcefully condemn it if they knew they had an opportunity to flip the seat.

Okay, I gather now this is about term limits in the courts, not Congress as I initially assumed.

Which, yeah, there probably does need to be some sort of major reform of the courts given how American society has changed in the last 200+ years.
