AFAIK kids themselves aren't dressing up in drag so this isn't a great point. And while I now enjoy a show on occasion, as a youngin I think I would've been scared of drag queens. The heavy makeup is similar to clowns, and I've only recently gotten over my fear of those.

My understanding is that only the adult performers are dressed in drag. To the extent there is outrage about this beyond just trans = bad, I thought it was about the lewd jokes told at these things. But there is a long tradition of children’s media/entertainment using adult humor to keep parents from being extremely bored, while the children blissfully don’t get it and just enjoy the colorful silly men. Like they had sex jokes in the cartoons I watched in the 90s as a kid, but only religious “think about the children!!” nut jobs cared.
