America needs to protect its tech company from salty European regulators.

I already called this a couple years ago and was praying the EU would do it, as they're the only governmental authority with the backbone to do it. It was always ridiculous that their own products were not compatible with each other for no good reason. (i.e. MacBooks use Thunderbolt while iPhones use Lightning)

The EU Only has the backbone because they don't have any tech companies.

SAP?...

The most cliche truism in business is "nobody ever got fired for buying SAP".

Based EU holding big tech to account. Cool You love to see it folks.

Of course I'm sure anti-EU leftists will completely ignore these and all the other ways in which the EU is capable to deal with multinational corporations in a way individual countries wouldn't be able to, because the reductionist narrative about EU being all neoliberal shills is so much more fun.

I mean regulations are bad, but also Apple is a BS company and its products are trash. I may generally support private enterprise, but I reserve the right to discern between companies that provide useful products and services and those that exist only to sell a brand.

Worse. Apple’s USB lightning scheme is a nuisance and a anticompetitive conspiracy  on the public. Someone has to stand up against it, even if this EU action seems to be unreasonable.

I'm not sure who I dislike more, Apple or EU regulators.

This is old news but on the whole

Good for consumers because they no longer have to buy the absurdly overpriced apple cables

Good for competition because it breaks apples closed shop

Good for the environment because being able to share cables means less pointless needing to buy different cables and therefore less electrical waste

All round completely sensible and good decision. Thank god we have something like the EU that both can and will stand up for the consumer when no one else will.

Yeah, the argument that this harms tech companies relies upon the idea that tech companies can only profit by requiring the use of their proprietary and overpriced peripherals. And if that's the case, then they're crap tech companies.

Laws = "bullying" ?  Huh

Am I supposed to feel pity now for huge mega-corporations who get "bullied"? Is this the no. 1 problem our societies are facing today?

Btw, I see this as a freedom move purely because it annoys me at work to get asked by colleagues whether I have a Apple cable while I only have a Samsung cable.

This truism is, indeed, applicable much more widely than tech products.

You mean companies that want us to pay them to do the work for them or not work at all?

The idea that the poor Apple is being bullied by the mean EU  is very amusing. I mean, are you serious?

This thread title, man.  If Atlas had been around in the 80s, I imagine yellow avatars would have led with “Government bullies car makers into including seatbelts”.

Meh.

If Apple believes they are unfairly treated by the EU, they have the freedom (or should we say 'freedumb') to pull out of the EU. (But I doubt they would do that - for obvious reasons.)

Nah this is legit less about me being a yellow avatar and more about the fact that I just hate the EU so much for actually posing a credible economic bloc strong as America.

Reads like common sense to me, not "bullying" (lol). Something that could already have been done by the private sector without new rules by govt authorities.
