British spin-offs of Indian cuisine are far better than the food that they actually eat on the subcontinent and there’s the truth of it.

This is exactly what my parents said after they spent a few weeks in India. Nevertheless, absolute freedom cuisine. One of if not my favorites with the possible exception of sushi, but a hell of a lot cheaper.

I will note though, while chicken Tandoori tends to be a big draw in a typical Buffet, I think it's overrated.

Not a huge fan, but it is true that there's so much variety that everybody can eventually find something they like. Not the worst either.

An all-vegetarian Indian restaurant (specifically serving Mumbai street food) opened up right down the street from me last year and has helped expose me to the cuisine. Prior I was always kind of hesitant to try it. But I f***ing love it now. I've been hooked on vada pavs since they opened.

They have also helped me want to branch out and try other types of Indian food now too. Indian restaurants were always fairly common here in northern New Jersey, and now I can take full advantage of them without much hesitancy.

I've only ever been to an Indian restaurant once in my life, and all I ordered was a bowl of white rice. So I can't really judge it.

Is it true that the Indians do not know what curry is? Or is that just an urban myth?

Too diverse and widespread to have a singular opinion on, British "indian" cusine is tasty but very much a different a thing.

Is it true that the Indians do not know what curry is? Or is that just an urban myth?

It's complicated.

Us Indians certainly know of the concept of "curry", but its usage depends on the region.

I'm Gujarati and we don't typically use the word "curry" for our dishes that would normally be described as "curry" outside of India (OSR and my fellow Atlas-Gujjus, please feel free to chime in).  We have specific names for these dishes.  The same goes for a lot of other Indian states/sub-cultures.

On the other hand, I have Tamil friends who use the word "curry" quite often (pronounced "kah-ri") and this makes sense: the word "curry" is thought to be derived from the Tamil "kari" (meaning "sauce for rice").

So, in short: it's an urban myth in the sense that we definitely know what *curry* is and what it represents to the world outside of India.  But its specific usage within India becomes more muddled.
