The Church of Scotland has voted to allow clergy to conduct same-sex marriages for the first time.

Members of the General Assembly in Edinburgh voted to change church law following years of campaigning.

It means same-sex couples will be able to marry in church in services conducted by ministers.

Ministers and deacons will be able to apply to become celebrants of same sex marriage, but they will not be forced to take part.

The results of the vote were: 274 for and 136 against.

Fairly significant news. Joining the Humanists, Episcopalians and the Methodists as the larger denominations that allow it.

Surprised this hadn't already happened. I thought that the Church of England did this almost a decade ago, and that the CoS is usually more modernizing than the CoE on such matters.

Edit: I'm a moron, ignore all this.

The CofE still hasn’t allowed same-sex marriages, which is pretty shockingly out of step with public attitudes in England (you might be getting confused with the fact that same-sex marriage was legalised almost a decade ago now in the UK).

Huh. That's even more surprising. Must be thinking of when, as a dumb edgy teenage atheist, I was speculating about the Lords Spiritual tanking the bill in Parliament. Probably mixing them up with stateside Episcopalians too.

Here's a devil's advocate.

The Church of Scotland is still declining.

Meanwhile, Conservative Catholic groups like the SSPX and FSSP are still growing.

So.....
