Horrible Kingdom, just because the name was so stupid. It only had one Sicily.

Let's see. It's got a comparatively huge population relative to other Italian states. It's populated almost exclusively by South Italian POPs, has a workable Literacy rate, has good RGOs for a consumer goods industry, and doesn't start in a foreign power's Sphere of Influence. Add to that good colonial prospects in the Mediterranean and North Africa, strong mobilization potential, and a highly strategic position along the Mediterranean trade routes.

Overall, not a bad faction to play an Italy campaign, if you don't feel like playing Sardinia-Piedmont.

The correct answer is it is HP because one Sicily is bad enough.

For what it's worth, the name originated because the first Kingdom of Sicily in the Middle Ages included both the island and the southern part of the Italian peninsula. After the Sicilian Vespers the Anjou lost the island to the Aragonese but kept the title of kings of Sicily (and the mainland part, from then on often referred to as Kingdom of Naples), so you had two kingdoms using the name - a Sicilia citra and a Sicilia ultra. When the two got reunified later the resulting union started to be called "Two Sicilies". Obviously no one ever uses "Sicily" for anything other than the island nowadays.

Anyway, it was pretty bad for reasons that have nothing to do with its name.

Hilarious Kingdom, but also a deeply depressing feudal backwater and a great example of the utter failure of statecraft that characterized the entire Congress of Vienna. Should have never been born, and should have been put out of its misery long before it did (not that what came after was perfect, of course).

I've never played as it for the same reason I've never played as any of the Germanies, I don't like having to form the real country.

Also I like to be All Protestant All The Time. Hence why even in Crusader Kings games I try to form my own spinoff of Catholicism or join a heresy.

Sweden might be more your speed then. You don’t really have many obvious places to colonize, but you do have the highest literacy rate in the game, and very good RGOs for a Military-Industrial Complex. Your main issue is going to be low base RGO productivity from low POP density, but that can be at least partially fixed with the Health Care reforms.

Henri IV was pretty cool. Louis XIII was tough but quite effective. Everyone after that has been generally bad news, yeah.

One of the reasons the Bourbons were such HPs is that they besmirched the name of le bon roi
