An inherent champion of freethought, Ingersoll was undoubtedly a true freedom fighter in not just on the matter of religion, also being a staunch supporter of causes as abolition of slavery and woman suffrage. Fighting against the repressive nature of religion is one worthy goal, he also became a progressive champion in the Republican Party, back when they allowed sane people to be members of the party. Underrated figure in the history of America.

See the section in the above link "Oratory and free thought" regarding hell..good quote..
Anyway he was definitely a freedom fighter.
However, I haven't read a lot of what he wrote.
