This is most likely someone who registered as Republican but became disillusioned with the Republican Party's rightward shift on social issues, and these people probably exist in significant numbers in affluent suburban areas. (The flip side would be people who are registered Democrats who now vote Republican in general elections because they feel Democrats have abandoned them economically and overfocus on social liberalism - such people exist in significant numbers in the Deep South and Appalachia.)
