This is most likely someone who registered as Republican but became disillusioned with the Republican Party's rightward shift on social issues, and these people probably exist in significant numbers in affluent suburban areas. (The flip side would be people who are registered Democrats who now vote Republican in general elections because they feel Democrats have abandoned them economically and overfocus on social liberalism - such people exist in significant numbers in the Deep South and Appalachia.)

Someone turned off by Palin, or a moderate Republican so angry with the party that he or she just couldn’t vote Republican that year.

Could also be a Democrat or Independent who voted in the Republican primary.

I would say the most likely scenario is actually, someone who was gonna vote Republican until Lehman brothers happened.
