Consult the McConnell Rule.  It says right there, in the fine print, that the Senate/Pres same party in election year clause does not apply to assasinations.  Democrats would have to wait.

What rule?
Republican presidents are permitted to appoint SCOTUS justices Always, while Democratic presidents are permitted to appoint SCOTUS justices Never

This is a tricky one for a number of reasons, because if it was a left-wing extremist that shot them over Roe vs. Wade, and Roe vs. Wade was upheld due to the assassination, I think it would actively encourage assassination attempts on the other SC justices - even potentially encouraged by some government officials.

I also think it's a possibility that if one of the votes to overturn Roe is killed, Roberts flips his vote on the case to prevent the assassin from winning.

Long story short, the Democrats probably would confirm a replacement and they would have the right to do so, but it would genuinely unleash a horrible pandoras box.

Absolutely.  Mitch McConnell certainly wouldn't hesitate if the shoe were on the other foot, so neither should we.
